The Common Room / Certificate and index names mismatch
« on: Saturday 02 June 07 07:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Before I send for a particular birth certificate from the GRO, I'd like to know if there is a problem if the persons name in the GRO index does not match that on the certificate. ie what if the index has an error in it and the correct name is on the certificate.  This is a rare name with one letter different in the index to the family name which may or may not be spelled correctly on the certificate.

Anyone know?

World War One / RFA Reserve Brigades
« on: Thursday 15 March 07 21:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a Medal Index Card which has a Corps identified as RFA 3 Res Bde TF, which I assume to be Royal Field Artillery, 3rd Reserve Brigade, Territorial Force. The Medal Index Cards is the Silver War Badge type.

Can any one tell me what the Reserve Brigades were as I can find no reference to them. Would they have been in reserve at Home still, or did they go overseas. Also were they regionalised like the other RFA brigades ie was the 3rd from a certain area in the UK?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1861/1851 Hopkins
« on: Sunday 10 December 06 11:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have the following family in 1871 and 1881

John (Jno in 1871) Hopkins b. 1817 St Pancras
Sarah Hopkins b. 1817 (shown as Windsor in 1871 and Egham in 1881)

Their married daughter Alice Rowe, shown b. St clements (Dane presumably as she is shown b. Strand in 1891) in 71 and 81,  and son in law William Rowe are living at the same address albeit this is different for 1871 and 1881.

In 1871 there is also a son John (Jno) b. 1845 also St Clements

I'm looking for them in 1851, (before Alice was married). I have found an Alice Hopkins aged 14 (RG90-66-70-63) as a neice in a Williams family (right age), but what about John, John and Sarah. John junior may be Thomas, John Thomas, Thomas John. IGI has both an Alice and Thomas baptised St Clement Dane in the right years both have mother/father John and Sarah.

Also John in 1851 maybe before he was married.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Look up 1851 - Bryant
« on: Wednesday 06 December 06 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Could someone kindly lookup Anna (or Ann) Bryant in 1851 please.

If still alive she would have been about 80. Last known address in 1849 was Buckingham Street, Strand (St Martin in the Field), although may have had to have moved since husband's death, Soho or St Pancras maybe.

Thanks

The Lighter Side / Bored at lunchtime - found this
« on: Friday 29 September 06 19:21 BST (UK)  »
Bored at lunchtime today so was just browsing through the ancestry index and found the following

1881 in Great Dunmow Essex:-  Old Joe and His Wife
Although after Monday "Old" Joe will only be known simply as Joe

1871 in Kent:- His Majesty Napoleon III Charles Louis with the Emperess Eugenie.  Just released by the Prussians presumably.
What did he have as his occupation?

1851 in Lincolnshire:- A Youth Who Does Not Know His Name
