Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Unexpected close relatives- a conundrum
« on: Monday 23 March 20 07:55 GMT (UK)  »
Having compiled an extensive tree and identified all my (small) number of first and second cousins I have been surprised to see two close relatives, apparently  a 2nd (339 cM) and a  3rd cousin (167 cM), found by AncestryDNA.

Both are shared matches with my 2nd cousin once removed (145 cM) linked via my grandfather's elder brother. The two unexpected relatives appear to be from the same family, the 3rd cousins mother sharing the 2nd cousins surname.

On these figures are they more likely to be related via my grandfather, who  did desert my grandmother, or my great grandfather?

She has yet to reply to a message while he said he knows little of family history but has 28 1st cousins

Can anyone help?  I'm looking for the 1750-1840 period

Wiltshire / POND Trowbridge early 19th century
« on: Wednesday 22 January 20 12:14 GMT (UK)  »
Mary POND married Matthew Poole at Trowbridge St James 28 August 1815 and had apparently died by 1833 (see https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=730123.0)

However, Mary's origins are unclear.  One Mary baptised 1787 in North Bradley appears to marry there in 1809. Mary Sophia Pond was baptised at the non-conformist chapel in Trowbridge in 1795, daughter of James Pond and Frances Cook. However, that family appear to move to London soon after the death of one daughter in 1807 and there appear to be no other Ponds  in Trowbridge before the 1820s.

Suggestions for where Mary may have come from are welcome

Somerset / John WITCOMB ca 1750 to Frome by 1772, possibly from Kingweston
« on: Thursday 26 December 19 09:38 GMT (UK)  »
John Witcomb married Betsey Millard in Frome in 1772 botp with 3 children born 1777,1779 and 1791 and baptised at the Zion Independent Frome

Locating John's baptism is proving elusive with the only one around the right time being in Kingweston to Thomas(?) and Mary in 1751. There is no marriage or burial of this John in Kingweston.

Can anyone provide any additional clues?

Wiltshire / Thomas and Emma WITCOMB Frome 1836-1845(?)
« on: Wednesday 11 December 19 11:57 GMT (UK)  »
My wife's ancestors, both born 1816, married in Trowbridge in 1836 with a daughter Caroline baptised at Badcox Lane in 1836 and buried in 1840 with the burial record showing the family were then at High Street, Frome, By 1845 they had moved to Chippenham living in Westmead Lane for many years.

However, I cannot clearly locate them in the 1841 census. A couple of the right ages can be found in Monmouthshire but with children Francis age 3 and Emma age 1 who appear in no birth records, or any subsequent records as far as I can see.

Can anyone help

Also what became of their daughters Elizabeth Turner Russell b 1850 and Eliza Jane Wild b 1856 after their marriages.

Canada / George William PEARCE Winnipeg died 1984
« on: Thursday 22 August 19 08:23 BST (UK)  »
Following on from my thread https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=817572.0 it appears that Christopher's son George died in Winnipeg in 1984.

There is a brief mention of the death of George William Pearce in the Winnipeg Free Press Archives of 18 June 1984 but the full obituary appears on the 19 June 1984. Can anyone access that please? I'd love to confirm that this George is the son of Christopher and any clues it offers to George's family. His widow Grace Manna died 14 March 2015 in Winnipeg

Canada / PEARCE- Kenora, Ontario
« on: Wednesday 21 August 19 08:24 BST (UK)  »
My great uncle Christopher George PEARCE born Somerset 1891 emigrated to Canada and married Pearl Ivy Prout in Kenoria in 1912. Both were later buried there, in 1958 and 1995. The 1921 census for Kenoria shows two sons Albert b 1913 and George b 1920.

Does anyone have more information about this family?
