The Common Room / clutches, gears and transmissions - patents
« on: Sunday 23 November 14 23:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently come across, via Mr Google, 21 patents filed 1920s-1930s by my grandfather's cousin, William Thomas Carling, who, as far as I knew, managed the family ironmongery business in Guildford High St.  The only things I can work out in the patents are clutches, gears and transmissions.

So I would like to know what these inventions were for - motor car?  And were these inventions important or significant at the time or since.  Also perhaps what level of qualification, experience William would have had.  Could he have been an engineer?

I have attached a link to a copy of a patent below (click on image for complicated diagram and his signature):

Useful Links / Link: Google patents
« on: Sunday 23 November 14 00:34 GMT (UK)  »
I happened to chance on a number of sites which list and/or details patents taken out by a relative.

The sites are very informative and can provide extra information for your genealogy.  The overarching search engine seems to be Google Patents.  So type in "Google patents" in the Google search box followed by a name.  Some patents are duplicated in Europe and US sites.

I learned that my relative lodged 21 patents in the 1920s for clutches, gears and transmissions, complete with complicated diagrams. Up until now I thought his occupation was to manage  the family ironmongers business in Guildford, Surrey.

Armed Forces / Victory's Traders - 1861 census - Portsmouth
« on: Tuesday 04 November 14 23:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have tracked down OH's possible g grandfather on the 1861 census at RG9/4483 - British Ships in Home Ports - at Portsmouth. (Alexander Fraser, ordinary seaman, aged 20,b Montrose, Scotland)

The heading of the section is Royal Navy Victory's Traders (indexed as Truders to Victory).  The summary gives a crew list of about 282 and had 24 guns.

My question is what is/are Victory's Traders.  (Googling gives me no answers & I know zilch about the Navy)  Thanks, Gazania

Occupation Interests / Slaughter House or butcher shop?
« on: Wednesday 22 October 14 01:59 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor, George Wareham (b 1796 Esher, SRY) was a butcher.  On the Surrey Land Tax records for 1832 + he is listed as being an occupier of a house and of a slaughter house in the Market Place, Kingston on Thames. The owner of the house is not the same person who owns the slaughter house and the rent is about half that of the house. The numbering of the slaughter house would suggest that it is in a back lane where there are stables with the same number.

My question: is this slaughter house more likely to be what we would now call a butcher shop, where the already dressed meat is displayed and sold. If this is the case, from where would a butcher access his meat? I am not sure whether cattle would be held and slaughtered so close to a Market Place.  I can only find information about the Smithfield markets where the cattle are held and slaughtered. Thanks for your interest, Gazania

Essex Lookup Requests / Brick Wall - James Fox baptised Walthamstow 14 April 1811
« on: Sunday 17 August 14 07:03 BST (UK)  »
I am not sure if this is the right board but here goes:

I would like help with my convict ancestor's early life and those of his forebears.

James Fox was baptised 14 April 1811 at St Mary's Walthamstow, parents Benjamin and Mary.  (This date corresponds with James's NSW Asylum records and the name Benjamin is given to James's son.)

I cannot find anymore about his parents or any siblings.

James 's occupation was a French polisher, sometimes an upholsterer & sawyer to a cabinet maker.  Would there be any apprentice records for the period after 1820?

He married Mary Ann Winch 4 Feb 1833 at St Mary's Newington Surrey. They had two children and lived at Camberwell.  James was transported to Oz in 1837.  I have extensive knowledge of James and his family after 1833 right up to the present; also the Winch family.

Thank you, Gazania

Nottinghamshire Resources & Offers / Link: Presentment Bills Search online
« on: Saturday 14 June 14 07:53 BST (UK)  »
Use "find" plus surname.  Otherwise read through the records to see some interesting behaviours.  I found a likely ancestor (having a very rare name) who was a churchwarden.

Surrey / Avis (nee Winch) ERRINGTON/HARRINGTON in 1851 census - help find please.
« on: Sunday 30 March 14 07:07 BST (UK)  »
I am unable to find Avis (Winch)Errington/Harrington in the 1851 census.  I have placed this request on the Surrey board as Camberwell, hamlet of Peckham was her last known address in 1841 census.  This what is known:

27 Oct 1782 Avis Winch was baptised in St Giles Camberwell, parents John Winch and Priscilla (Bennet)

28 April 1836 Avis Winch married Robert Errington, widower, St ?Nick..., Deptford, Kent

1841 census: HO 107/1051/7 Lambeth, Camberwell Hamlet of Peckham.
Robt Harrington, 80, not born in Co
Avis Harrington, 60, born in Co
(better eyes than mine deciphered above)

Sep qtr 1843 death: Robert Harrington, Camberwell district
1851 census: neither found
Mar qtr 1858 death: Robert Harrington, Camberwell district

Sep qtr 1859 death: Avis Harrington, Camberwell district.

My direct ancestor, Giles Winch, had a sister, Avis Winch, which is an unusual name.  I would like to find her on the 1851 census to confirm that Avis Harrington is indeed born Peckham/ Camberwell and thus the sister.

Thanks, Gazania
