John William Coburn left a probate (will) behind

Hello Sam...

Welcome to Rootschat :)

The probate file for William John COBURN has already been digitised by FamilySearch.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-909-49491-86523-19?cc=1865481

Not that helpful from a family history point of view.

Family Search have re-jigged their website so if the above link doesn't work go here...

Can I strongly second Minnie's suggestion of purchasing a printout of the 1881 RANSOURE/MARSH marriage.

And while you're at it also ask BDM NZ to compare the spelling of the surname on the BDM NZ website to the original marriage register. Tell them you're pretty sure it's meant to be RANSOME.

A printout costs $20.40 and can be ordered and delivered online.

As the information was supplied by the bride and groom it's as accurate as you're going to get.

More importantly it will save a lot of time and effort and speculation.

Regards
Beg

Hey, thanks for that, shame it doesn't tell us any more would have liked to know more about the guy.

I'm going to do that now, not that they ever change them, my other Grandad tried to get his Grandmothers name corrected over a year ago and nothings been done.

I suppose I'm going to have to, it'll be a 2 minute noodle week haha. Will it be an instantaneous email? Or will I have to wait some time for it to arrive?

Cheers, Sam.

I'm wondering if this is him

19 years old, from Surrey, Hy J Ransome, single man, labourer travelling on the 'Waimea' in 1876

This man is born the same year as yours 1857!

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3A%22John%20Henry%22~%20%2Bsurname%3ARansome~%20%2Brecord_country%3A%22New%20Zealand%22

:) Now I found this as well haha, glad someone else thinks it could be him, the Henry John was throwing me off a little bit.

I researched this a little but I couldn't find any births/census records of a John Henry Ransome (or similar)from Surrey, I know Surrey is near/in London though so would he have possibly just put down where he was staying prior to immigrating?

I've been lucky to mainly have families coming out here so far which has been VERY helpful, single labourers are a bit tougher.

A death certificate would help

Cheers, Sam

Hi Sam,

Welcome to the board ....  We usually suggest getting a Printout instead of a Certificate, as it is a copy of the original document, is cheaper and can be emailed to you.

Cheers

AH thats right, Cheers!

Interesting - is this a picture of the wife Mary Ransome who became Mary Coburn

"Name:      Coburn, Mary, prev Ransome, d 15th October 1905
Biographical History:      Wife of John Ransome, was a nurse in Masterton in the 1880s until her death. In 1892 she married Wilhelm Johan Kobrow, aka William John Coburn/Cobourn"

John William Coburn outlived her and died in 1934?
He left a probate (will) behind

He applied for Naturalisation in 1931, this record might clear up where he came from

Sorry nothing about John Henry Ransome

THANK YOU!!!!. I looked for a naturilization and a will for Coburn and couldn't find either, kicking myself for that!

Hi Sam,

You couldn't stretch to a marriage printout could you?

From 1880/1881 – Marriage Act 1880 (Dated 17 August 1880)
Local number
Bride and Groom

When and where married
Name and surname of the parties
Ages
Rank or profession
Condition of parties
Bachelor or spinster (or as case may be)
If widow or widower date of death of former wife or husband
Birthplace
Residence: Present, Usual
Parents

Father's name and surname
Father's rank or profession
Mothers name and Maiden surname
Signatures

Bride and groom
Witnesses
Officiating minister (or Registrar)

Minniehaha.

How much cheaper are they...... I've got 5/6 i'd like to purchase which adds up quickly (Student life eh). I had a feeling my Grandad may have purchased it and it lacked much of that, I'll have to ask him next I see him.

Yep thats her, the original I believe is held by the Wairarapa Archive, my Grandad has a copy of it.

I hadn't seen it with that write up though helps with her death date as the cemetery record is incorrect iirc. (oh and if anyone is researching Wairarapa ancestors pay a visit to the archives the team there is BEYOND knowledgeable.)

Hi and welcome to Rootschat. There is an 1886 burial record for a John Ransome in Masterton.

http://www.mstn.govt.nz/services/cemetery/index.php?record=000342&id=search&last_name=&first_name=&cemetery=archer&start=10180

Thanks!

Yep thats him alright, I've been intending to go have a look (living in Masterton and all) but I believe i've been told there isn't a headstone.

Hi all first of what I'm sure will be many posts here and its it to do with something i've had quite some trouble with. My trouble is with my 3xgreat grandfather John Henry Ransome. Here's what I currently know
    • Arrived in NZ sometime prior to Apr 1881, when he married Mary Marsh in Wellington, his name is mistranscribed as Ransoure on BDM
    • Lived in wellington, presumably in Newtown where his children, my 2xggm Maud (born 24 Dec 1881) and Effie Louise (born Jun 1883) were born
    • Moved to Masterton some time during early 1885 upon which time he started business as a chimney sweep
    • Died on the 28th May 1886, aged just 30 from an attack of typhoid, surprisingly for a chimney sweep there is a good write up in the local paper about his death which shows him to have been quite a popular man
    • His wife remarried to even more of an enigma, Wilhelm/William John/Johann Kobrow/Coburn/Cobourn and had a son who's birth wasn't registered but thats another post

    Now my problems

He fails to appear on any electoral rolls even after universal suffrage for men is introduced.

Having died so young (his eldest daughter was only 5) nothing is known about him in the family, my granddad knows very little.

My main goal here is just to find out where he came from, I scoured through every John Henry/John/Henry Ransome/Ransom born approx 1850 in the 1861 UK census but I found nothing, it doesnt look as though his family came out as well as there are very few Ransome's in NZ and none that add up to him being a child of (that I've found), nor was he born here. There is a possible immigration record on Family Search but I'm not entirely confident it's him.  A death certificate would help but frankly I can't afford it, plus I also have a feeling it may not tell me much. So any information above what I have would be fantastic.

    Cheers, Sam
