Suffolk / Re: William Reynolds Blogg, born in Suffolk - help finding his family

Possible death for William in Dec 1852 Norwich age 65.  That would fit with 63 in 1851.

Thank you for this, I can view the basic transcript on Ancestry but it doesn't say his age, just 'William Blogg, Oct-Nov-Dec 1852', therefore it was difficult to be sure it was the right man.

That death is right... Findmypast newspapers have a snippet that says ...

On Wednesday last aged 65 Mr William Blogg  of St Giles Hill formally of London Street. He's at St Giles Hill in 1851.

And thank you for this detail, I had a FindmyPast subscription probably over a year ago but I never knew there were newspapers on there.

I did wonder if Reynolds was his mother's name, although I have been unable to find a Blogg-Reynolds marriage for the 20 years before his birth (until 1788) in Suffolk.

Suffolk / William Reynolds Blogg, born in Suffolk - help finding his family
« on: Saturday 06 February 21 15:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'd really appreciate help with finding the parents of William Reynolds Blogg, who may be from Suffolk.
Here's the information that I have for him already.

According to the 1841 census, William (written as W.R.Blogg, transcribed as U.R.Blogg) was not born in the county of Norfolk (Heigham). According to the 1851 census, he was born in Laxfield in Suffolk. Either way, he was born about 1788, but I can't seem to find a baptism record for him around this time in Suffolk.

On 5th October 1809 at St Andrew, Norwich, Norfolk, William (said to be a bachelor of the parish) married Hannah Maria Martin (spinster of the parish) by License. It was witnessed by a possible relation of William Reynolds Blogg - Sarah Blogg.

William seems to have been a haberdasher, and was living in Heigham in Norfolk in 1841 and 1851. In 1851, William's occupation is 'servant register office'. I have not found his death record yet, or censuses after 1851.

William Reynolds Blogg and Hannah Maria Martin had several children in Norfolk; these are the ones I have found so far -
- William Blogg (b.1810)
- Emma Blogg (b.1812)
- Edwin Martin Blogg (b.1814)
- Frederick Samuel Blogg (1817-1868)
- Ellen Sarah Blogg (b.1824)

Many thanks for any help,
Holly

Fife / Re: Fifeshire Cavalry

Hi all,

I realise this is an old thread, but I'm really grateful for the information on here - I am currently researching my partner's ancestry, and his 4x great grandparents are Charles Gilchrist and Catherine Robinson.

I wondered if any of you have found any more information on the family since this thread's last replies, as I'd be very grateful for any knowledge you may have found on this family in the last two years, and the possibility that Charles Gilchrist could be Charles Watson Gilchrist; the son of John Thomas G Gilchrist, himself a son of Thomas G Gilchrist (a baillie and merchant).

Best wishes,
Holly

Hello all,
I'm trying to research my partner's ancestry and I've become a little stuck with the transition between Lincolnshire and Scotland (and it's taking me extra time as I'm not familiar with Scottish geography at all).

John Gilchrist was baptized 1st Jan 1805 in Frampton, Lincolnshire, the son of Charles and Ann 'Gilchriste' (John has siblings called Charles, Ann, Robert, Catherine and Elizabeth).

I am looking into Charles Gilchrist's ancestry and life, and I'm struggling a bit. Charles married Catherine Robinson on 16th Aug 1798 in Boston, Lincolnshire (other family trees suggest Catherine is the same person as Ann mentioned above, and that her name is 'Catherine Ann Robinson').
I have not found Charles Gilchrist's death or burial records, although from records from other family trees on Ancestry, it looks like he was part of the Fifeshire Cavalry (I will research this but if anyone knows anything about this cavalry, I'd be very interested to hear your knowledge!).

Gilchrist is a Scottish name, so I presumed there would be Scottish ancestry somewhere up Charles' family line. On Ancestry, some family trees suggest his name is Charles Watson Gilchrist, and that he was the son of John Thomas G Gilchrist and Betty Struthers, although I've found no proof of the 'Watson' middle name for my Charles Gilchrist, not even on the marriage bond.  If these are his parents, then his baptism is: 4 Feb 1770 in Cramond, Midlothian, Scotland.
These same family trees list John Thomas G Gilchrist's probate, which says:

"Gilchrist, John, son of the deceased Thomas G., merchant, and late baillie of Dumfries 17 Dec 1783. "

So the family trees suggest a lineage of:
Charles Watson Gilchrist, son of John Thomas G Gilchrist
and John was the son of Thomas G (a merchant and baillie of Dumfries).

I would really appreciate any help with finding out whether my Charles Gilchrist is 'Charles Watson Gilchrist' as mentioned above, and any more information available about the family.

Many thanks for any help you can offer,
Holly

England / Re: Rowland/Sayles/Griffin - help finding Audrey Rowland's family

Marriage on freebmd 1921 Clara Sales/Frederick Griffin

4 births 1921-1928 in Rotherham

Thanks for your help! I've just checked out the 1939 register and found Charles A Rowland living with Clara. I've just heard from my auntie, and apparently when Charles was registering the birth of Audrey, he'd had an argument with Clara, so registered Audrey as a Griffin - Clara's previous husband's name.

If your great aunt is quoting from the birth cert she must have details of mother/father so what does it say?

See my edit above

She has said that her mother Audrey told her that she had always thought she was a Rowland, but that she had found out (after her parents had died) that she was actually registered as a Griffin. I don't believe my great auntie has the birth certificate - but her mother did have it (or see it) at some point.

I looked for marriages for Audrey's supposed parents and couldn't find any marriages between Sayles/Griffins and Rowlands. This is making me doubt whether my great aunt has the maiden name confused.

Who did Audrey marry & who did she name as her father on her marriage cert

What was her full birthdate

What surname did she marry under

I don't have the marriage certificate, but Audrey married Stanislaw Proniewicz in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1948 in Don Valley, Yorkshire, and she is said to be Audrey 'Rowland' on the marriage index, although my great auntie said her birth certificate says Audrey Griffin. Her full birth date is 29th March 1929.

Would you know if this family is related to the Ashforth from late 1800s Frederick Ashforth of Rock road Sheffield who was a builder, thank you

I am sorry, I have never come across a Frederick Ashforth in my family tree, although my Ashforth's did originate from Sheffield, and moved to Chapeltown and Burncross.
