England / Rowland/Sayles/Griffin - help finding Audrey Rowland's family

Hi everyone,
I am currently trying to help my great auntie find her ancestors (all of whom have passed away).

The family tree starts with Audrey Rowland, who was born in March 1929 in Rossington, Doncaster (Yorkshire) according to her daughter.

I am trying to work with what my great auntie has told me, but I am really not getting anywhere.
I'll list the information below that I know.

- Audrey Rowland was born March 1929, likely in Rossington, Doncaster, Yorkshire. She may have been registered as a Griffin. I have found a birth registration in April-May-June 1929 in Doncaster for an Audrey Griffin, but the maiden name doesn't match what I've been told (I was told Sayles, but the record says Griffin).
- Audrey's mother's maiden name was Clara Sayles from Rotherham, Yorkshire. She married a man with the surname Griffin, but then left him and married Charles Anthony Rowland (or Anthony Charles Rowland), possibly from Nottingham. AC/CA Rowland's parents were perhaps from Heanor, Nottinghamshire (I'm presuming maybe Heanor, Derbyshire is this same place and the county boundaries have changed? She did say Heynor, Nottinghamshire).

Warwickshire / DAFFERN surname, Warwickshire - a son of Bonaventure?

Hello all,

One of my ancestors is Elizabeth Daffern (baptized 1703 in Binley, Warwickshire). She was the daughter of Samuel Daffern and Hannah.

I'd really appreciate help with 2 things;

1) Finding the marriage of Samuel Daffern and Hannah.
I'm presuming the marriage would be in Warwickshire, as all (that I have found) of Samuel and Hannah's children were baptized in Warwickshire (see below)
- William bap 1692
- Samuel bap 1694
- Thomas bap 1696
- Hannah bap 1698
- William bap 1701
- Elizabeth bap 1703

2) Finding the family (parents, siblings, grandparents) of Samuel Daffern.
I've noticed that there is a Bonventure Daffern who could be Samuel's father (he's the right age and in the area, Daffern isn't a popular surname, and a while back someone suggested the link between them but I've not found any records linking them).


Please note, Daffern is spelled many ways - Dafferne, Daffern, Dafforn, Daffarn, and many others.
Bonaventure also seems to have a variety of spellings and mistranslations.

Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. This research is for a family album for my father for Christmas, so I'd like to show him as much about his ancestry as possible.

Main family tree:

Joseph Ashforth (mason) married Hannah Jackson, on 12 February 1737 at Cathedral St Peter, Sheffield.
They had at least the following children:

- Fanny, baptised 29 Aug 1754 at Attercliffe
- Sarah, baptised 01/01/1761 Attercliffe
- Samuel, baptised 08/08/1751 Attercliffe
- Bullus/Bullhouse (could this be a maiden name of an ancestor?), baptised 04/10/1758 Attercliffe. He married Sarah Baker on 11th Mar 1785 at Sheffield, and had children James (bap 1793), Joseph (bap 1785), John (bap 1790) and Ann (bap 1788).
- Abraham, baptised 30/10/1748 Attercliffe. He married Elizabeth Sutton on 6 September 1797 Sheffield, had children Hannah, Bullhouse, Samuel, Joseph and Elizabeth).
- Rachel (bap Jan 1757) Attercliffe.
- William (bap 23/07/1747) Attercliffe
- Thomas (bap 5/11/1743) Attercliffe. This is the Thomas that I think may be the father of John, and the grandfather of Abraham.

The other family tree containing Abraham's that I suspect could be related is:

John Ashforth (Ashford on record), father of Joshua, Jacob, Jonathan and Abraham. Abraham is baptised 10/03/1675 at St Peter Sheffield, believe this was 'Ashford' too.

Abraham had at least these children:
- John bap 28/04/1708 Sheffield
- Robert bap 16/10/1709 Sheffield
- Anne bap 26/01/1713 Sheffield
- Abraham bap 27/03/1715 Sheffield. He married Martha Hoole, on 19/08/1737 at Sheffield, they had at least two children: Sarah (bap 25/11/1743) and Elizabeth (bap 01/01/1741).
- Elizabeth bap 29/04/1711 at Sheffield.

Hello all,

After a long break from research, I've decided to start my search again for the ancestors of Abraham Ashforth, baptised September 1802 at Cathedral St Peter in Sheffield, son of John Ashforth (labourer, later said to be a Mason,  and a fettler) and Hannah. I thought starting afresh would be the best way to do this.

I have never found the marriage of John and Hannah. There is one at Rotherham, John Ashforth and Hannah Heaton, although they baptised their children elsewhere, so it would be strange for them to baptise only one child at Sheffield.

I have been working on the basis that 'Abraham' is a name passed down through the family. It's a rare name in my research, so decided to try this out.
I've found several Abraham Ashforth's in Sheffield, and have been putting little family trees together to see if they are linked to my Abraham.
I've attached two photos to show the family tree I've got so far.

I believe Thomas Ashforth, bap 5 Nov 1743 at Attercliffe (son of Joseph Ashforth), could be the grandfather of my Abraham. Thomas seems to have had a son called John, bap 01/05/1771 at Cathedral St Peter in Sheffield. This John could be the father of Abraham.

But the research is all based on it 'could be'. I could really use some help making links between these people, as all I have at the moment is a family name and some dates that seem to fit.

I've attached the two photos below. The first is the family tree I'm working with. The second is an additional Ashforth family in Sheffield with some Abraham's, who I suspect could be related to the other tree above it.

Just to add:

Just in case this may help with tracing occurrences of the name, there appear to be HELLELEY's at Felkirk near Barnsley, as well as HELLEWELL's at Penistone.

Hello all,

I would really appreciate some help researching Rachel Hallaley/Halliley. I know very little about her, only that she married John Bullosse (1715-1799) on 20 Jul 1743 at Wath Upon Dearne. With John, she had the following children (I believe), all baptised at Wentworth:
- John (1745-1815)
- Thomas (b.1746)
- William (1751-1839)
- Anne (b.1754)
- Joseph (b.1756)
- Richard (1758-1773)
- Sarah (b.1763)
- James (1765-1772)
- Elizabeth (b.1768)

And then there's two other possible children that I haven't found baptism records for:
- Rachel, buried 12 Nov 1771 at Wentworth, said to be the daughter of John Bulloss
- Samuel, said to be the son of John (a butcher) and Rachel Bulloss, according to Samuel's son John's baptism in 1777 at Wentworth.

I think Rachel's husband John Bulloss(e) (sometimes spelled Bullhouse) was a butcher, turned farmer. What would really help me trace Rachel's parents and siblings would be to find her burial record - I found one that looked promising at Wentworth:
- Rachel Bullosse, from Thorpe Hesley (where most of the children were born, but they were baptized up the hill at Wentworth), wife of John (a butcher), buried at Wentworth 08/10/1785, died of jaundice. Despite this, the age given is 44 years, which is much too young for my Rachel (44 yrs old would give a birth date of 1741, which is only 2 years before the marriage to John Bullosse).

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

P.S. The name Halliley/Hallaley is an unusual one, on the Genuki website the name is sometimes transcribed as Halliday. I've found no trace of Halliley's/Halliday's at Wath Upon Dearne, and only two burials featuring the name at Wentworth - John Hallilay/Halliday aged 82 years from Cortwood, buried 14/07/1779, a labourer. And Jane Hallilay/Halliday aged 73 years from Cortwood, wife of John (2nd wife), buried 23/06/1778.

Elizabeth Dobb, James's second wife was born about 1793 in Rotherham (I believe she was the daughter of Thomas Dobb and Martha Eyre, baptized 5 Jan 1794 at Rotherham All Saints). On the wedding document for James and Elizabeth, it says that Elizabeth was a spinster, and that James was widowed - so then I went looking for a possible marriage for James.
The most feasible one I could find was to Jane Snidall, at Sheffield, on 14 Jan 1811. I believe this Jane was born 1788, baptized 12 Oct 1788 in Sheffield. Jane passed away in March 1814, buried 11 March 1814, at Attercliffe, where she is said to be 25 years old, and the wife of James.

That's what I was thinking with him being 17 at the second marriage, not very likely at all. And with the first marriage being 4 years previous to this - it would have made him 14, so his birth date must be earlier than the 1797 suggested in the censuses.

The Vincent born 1770 would have been 17 years older than the brother he had, called James, who was born in 1787, which would make him a feasible sibling. Not so much if his brother had been born in 1797 like it suggested on censuses for my James. But I think it is likely that my James could be the James born 1787, brother of Vincent, in Clarborough. Both this James and his brother Vincent had a father's name of Joseph - a name which my James gave to one of his sons.
