United States of America / emigrants return
« on: Sunday 15 January 06 12:52 GMT (UK)  »
Why would someone who went to the East Cost of US in 1881 come back to England and marry. He went out in his teens. Was there a problem or was it for contract work.

Jesse Woodhead married someone called Elizabeth but can't find as before 1837. Three of his sons emigrated to US and Canada but 2 came back before 1891. One of his sons was called Jesse after him. Any information would be helpful.

George was a boat builder and was dead by the time his daughter Sarah Anne was 3. His wife Charlotte brought up 2 children by herself until Sarah Anne married husband 1. She then married a man in Derbyshire. Does anyone out there have any further info on the name Shuttleworth and any info of where it orginated and  how it would have migrated to Nottingham would be helpful. Was it because of the lace/knitting manufacture.

Derbyshire / Hardwick's in Derbyshire
« on: Sunday 15 January 06 12:30 GMT (UK)  »
My Hardwicks originate from the Ashover area in Derbyshire. Some relation to Florence Nightingale. I'm trying to sort this out but to no avail as the Nightingales changed their names after a bequest in a will of a man named Nightingale.

Most of the Hardwicks lived in Heath at the start of the 1800s, but some of them did own a place called Press Farm in Press near Ashover as their names are on the Deeds of the property. Any further information will be useful.

Shropshire / HARRISONS in Black Country

My Harrison relations are elusive. I was once told that they may have been Romanys as there was a large amount of them around there. Cannot find anyone apart from Great Grandma and Great Granddad's marriage cert 1876 both being resident in Dawley Magna. Nothing else fits either on census and can't find anyone on bmd. Does anyone out there have any info.

My G Granddad was Benjamin Harrison and his father was Benjamin Harrison too. The son married Sarah Hill in 1876 and they had a number of children. The first Ruth was born in Dudley before going to Derbyshire where the rest including Ethel, my Grandma was born.

Derbyshire / Hardy's in Derbyshire
« on: Sunday 15 January 06 12:16 GMT (UK)  »
All the family come from round Winster, Great Wilne, Sandiacre and Sawley up to 1830s when mining started and they moved up to Ripley and then up to Staveley. From there my Granddad moved to Yorkshire in 1926. Problem! William Hardy married Mary Bott in 1703. Anyone got any ideas where the family came from before then. I've an idea that it was Scotland from Strathclyde where the Hardy Clan were. He called his children William, David and Anne. All Scots monachs. Can anyone prove or disprove this.

Also interested in getting in touch with any descendants of Joseph Hardy and Sarah Anne Shuttleworth (Pheasant/Fesant/Feasant)

Does anyone out there have any further information on the Bacons of Steeple Bumpstead. My cousin and myself have done some research and have got info of John Bacon and Susan Nunn. Their children we have info on are Joseph William, Abigale Kate and Jervaise. Other children we do not have info on. Any info greatfully received.
