thank you both so very much!  very enlightening :)  And yes, it does confirm he arrived in UK prior to enlisting. so that solves the mystery of my original photo.

a question:  what does the phrase "taken on strength" mean?

Nice catch on the marriage...I have found the marriage certificate already but nice to see it was noted in his military record as well.

also very cool to see that there is a war diary.  the link took me to a place to download it correct?

nice to pin down that he was in France during the war.  I believe they've sent me his entire file and I don't see any dates before his enlistment in may 1916 so I don't think he was involved in the German 1915 campaign you mentioned.  but will let you know if I find anything that says otherwise.
Again thanks so much for your help!

Hi Justin and Jim,

Hopefully you see this!  I have JUST received Frederick's military records from South Africa...finally!  and it does solve some of the mystery below.  There appears to be different types of paperwork in the documents I received (about 17 pages, many of them near duplicates of each other.).  The initial pages are all South African documents, but toward the end, there are some UK documents, specifically the Short Form enlistment forms which I was extremely surprised to find.  I doubt I can upload all of the pages due to their size, but will try and upload a few if you would perhaps take a look.

thanks so much!

that's fantastic find about the cemetery.  It definitely fits the family.  Might actually be many in the area still today!  And yes unfortunately the Aughnamullen records that do exist aren't necessarily in the time frame I need.  I'm still hopeful that I'll be able to pin down some information for them.  I was hoping to find Mason's marriage to Elizabeth to finally get an accurate surname for her but alas it's not to happen right now...

so...YES!  Evidence so far points for Mason White (brother of Margaret) winding up in Pennsylvania.  I have a few death records that list Mary Neville (various misspellings of that) and Mason White, including son Henry (birth date is off from the Scotland record, but close).  That find was fantastic! thanks so much!
