Canada / Death/Obit Margaret Brock (née Paterson), London, Ontario
« on: Wednesday 16 March 22 03:00 GMT (UK)  »
I realise that this may be a long shot but I am seeking an obit or any information whatsoever regarding an elusive relation, notably my grandfather’s first cousin.

Margaret Paterson, born on 27 July 1912 in Glasgow, Scotland to John Paterson and Marjory Carmichael McLaren, emigrated to Canada with her grandmother on the SS Montcalm in 1926, settling in London, Middlesex, Ontario.

On 5th September 1936, Margaret married Thomas Henry Brock, whom she subsequently divorced in 1949. Her certificate of marriage cites her occupation as supply clerk and her residential address as 10 Adelaide St, London, Ontario. I have been unable to ascertain if there was any issue from this marriage. Thomas Henry Brock died in 1994 in London, Ontario, and is interred in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

That is all the information I have regarding Margaret Brock (née Paterson). However, I am hopeful that she retained her married surname and that an obit was published in the London free Press or other local newspaper.

Any help or suggestions would be most greatly appreciated.

All the best,

Armed Forces / What infringement is this?
« on: Sunday 24 October 21 23:30 BST (UK)  »
A Scottish ancestor served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War 1. His service record cites the following infringement: Forfeits 9d for losing by neglect 1 housewife Place: Field Date: 22/5/18 Remarks taken from Army Form B213, Army Form A. 36, or other official documents: B2069 DO 54/18.

What does ‘losing by neglect 1 housewife’ denote in this military context? I’m perplexed.

Roxburghshire / YULE - MI Smailholm Churchyard
« on: Wednesday 21 July 21 02:19 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone tell me if there are Monumental Inscriptions for YULE in Smailholm Churchyard, notably James Yule (an officer of the Church buried there in 1850) and his wife, Henrietta Yule?

Many thanks.

United States of America / Mauro Di Giovanni Mystery
« on: Tuesday 06 August 19 09:51 BST (UK)  »
Mauro Di Giovanni (b. 1873) emigrated from Italy to New York in 1903, followed by his wife, Angela, and three children in 1905. A fourth child was born to them in New York in 1906, the address cited on that birth certificate being 444 Metropolitan Avenue.

Mauro Di Giovanni drowned in a boating mishap on the Hudson River between 1906 (following the birth of his fourth child) and 1911 (when his widow remarried).

However, I can’t find a death certificate for him in either the New York City or New York State online death indexes covering those years, despite using every permutation of the surname Di Giovanni. Why would this be?

Presumably, his body was recovered and his wife duly informed of his death. In the event that his body wasn’t recovered, could a death certificate still be issued?

Maritime accidents on the Hudson River, particularly involving steamboats, were not uncommon in that era. Is there an exhaustive list of these held in an archive somewhere?

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Many thanks.

Canada / John Brown Yule Mystery
« on: Wednesday 11 October 17 08:42 BST (UK)  »
John Brown Yule (born 2 July 1872, Hamilton, Scotland), emigrated to Canada in 1908. His parents were Peter Yule and Annie Yule (her maiden surname).

I have all his passenger list records and found him in the 1911 Canadian census domiciled as a boarder at 2 Joseph Street, Toronto, Ontario, his occupation cited as plumber and his marital status as single.

The nationality of John Brown Yule is recorded in the 1911 census as Canadian, indicating that he was naturalised prior to 1915, those naturalisation records not being available online.

The only further documentation of him is a 1931 passenger record for his nephew, Peter Yule Paterson, on which he cites his his uncle, John Yule, living in Victoria Ave, Toronto.

Can anyone find him in a 1931 (or subsequent) Toronto directory?

I am unable to find a marriage or death for John Brown Yule in the Ontario records on Ancestry.

I would be exceedingly grateful for any information regarding John Brown Yule, particularly a possible marriage and his date of death in Ontario (or possibly elsewhere in Canada).

Many thanks in advance,

Lanarkshire / Palace Lodge, Motherwell Road, Hamilton
« on: Tuesday 20 September 16 10:07 BST (UK)  »
I have a certificate citing the place of death (in 1900) as Palace Lodge, Motherwell Road, Hamilton.

At that time, was Palace Lodge a hospital, nursing home or refuge for the elderly? Is it still extant?

I suspect it was some sort of charitable institution.

Any information would be most appreciated.

Essex / William Hamilton of Wanstead
« on: Sunday 28 February 16 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
According to his death certificate, William Hamilton died, aged 86, on 6 June 1936 at Central Home, Leytonstone, his usual address being 16 Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead. The informant was E. Webster (no known relation) of 16 Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead, 'causing the body to be buried.'

Where was William Hamilton likely to have been buried?

Unfortunately, my quest for surviving Central Home records through West Ham Borough Council, Newham Archives and Local Studies Library and Waltham Forest Archives proved fruitless. No luck there at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Rodeo
