I find that cousins marrying each other to be more common in rural areas where not a lot of people leave and not a lot of new people come in.
My grt grt grandparents were 2nd cousins to each other and the same grt grt grandmother's parents were also 2nd cousins to each other.

Hello
I haven't researched this line since posting this so going to give it another look.

If we just base it on her 1851 census entry, where she states she is born in Leicester and put a radius of 10 years either side of 1816 using the name Eliza, We get these -

Eliza Robinson
Born 4 Nov 1811
Bapt 13 Dec 1811
Parents - Thomas Robinson and Ann (Middleton)

Eliza Catherine Robinson
Bapt 10 Apr 1820
Parents John Briggs Robinson and Elizabeth.
(This Eliza appears to die 1837)

Using the name Elizabeth and location of Leicester, this one pops up -
Elizabeth Jane Robinson
Bapt 1 Dec 1817 St Margarets, Leicester
Parents Walter Robinson and Jane.
About the same age for Eliza.

Interestingly this Walter also has a daughter called thus -
Ellinor Robinson
Born Nov 1812
Bapt 28 Aug 1815 St Margarets, Leicester

I wonder if this is the ''Ellen Robinson'' who is similar age to Eliza and also states she is born Ireland.

On a marriage record of Walter's son Walter in 1843. Father Walter is given as 'Walter McCarthy Robinson' A predominately Irish name.
Could this be Eliza's father?
All the children of Walter marry in St Margarets and Eliza marries Thomas Simmons in St Margarets.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Bradgate and Jervis
« on: Monday 27 May 19 10:45 BST (UK)  »
I have 2 lines which seem to have by adoption or grant, be in possession of Arms and Crest.

Throughout the 1500s and 1600s the Bradgates of Little Peatling have been styled Gentlemen, Esquires and Armigers.
Thomas Bradgate was assessed of his personal goods at his death in 1539 and was one of the wealthiest in the county being valued more than a few squires put together.
His son Richard purchased the manor of little peatling and at his death in 1572 was in possession of the lordships of Little Peatling and Bruntingthorpe along with a 3000 acre estate. I have a line descending from this Richard's grt grandson, Richard Bradgate, Gent 1590-1655.

I cant find much visuals on the arms.
They are given on the Bradgate pedigree in Nichols backed up with research by Sir William Dugdale to be thus-
Crest- An arm in armour proper, banded with a ribbon vert couped below the elbow bendways, the hand also proper grasping the upper part of a broken lance gu, point downward ar.
Arms- Ar, a Mascle bendways between two lions passant guard gu.

I then have the Jervis line of Great Peatling.
John Jervis/Gerveis purchased the manor in 1567 and his son William Jervis, Esq died 1597 aged 94.
His tomb features the arms.
Nichols and tenous burkes armory gives these arms and just mentions "Granted by Camden"

Crest- A hawks head or, between two wings expanded erm.
Arms- Sa, a chev erm, between three hawks close ar.

Any info on these arms and images would be much appreciated.

The Common Room / Marriage Bond money?
« on: Sunday 19 May 19 17:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Can someone enlighten me as to why a marriage bond was taken in such a large amount of money? Was this a form of dowry or compensation?

I have on a court document, the following mentioned by defendant John Nichols about the 2nd wife of Thomas Dudley, Vintner and Citizen of London  - ''Defendant Lucretia Dudley who was worth £1,000 and more at the time of her marriage to Thomas Dudley, when she was married to Thomas Dudley, who therefore did agree with her and her friends on her behalf before his marriage to her that if lucretia did survive thomas, he would leave and pay her £900 and if she died before him an amount not exceeding £300 as she write her will.''

''The said Thomas Dudley, together with his son and heir apparent Henry Dudley and John Scattergood, Citizen and Vintner of London did by their bond bearing the date 1653 become bound unto one William Newbould and John and Robert Nichols who are named trustees on her behalf to the sum of £1,200 conditioned to the said clause above''

In 1653, £1,000 was a very large sum of money, why would lucretia be worth this much? and for Thomas to have to leave a very large sum of £900. When this bond was signed would Thomas have to have paid the bond in full?

I dont know much about Lucretia but I think she was bapt Nichols/Nicholson. She was previously married to James Hedges, Gentleman of Witney, Oxfordshire. He died in 1653 and this bond was enacted the same year.
I cant see record of this marriage anywhere.
