The Common Room / Death certificate informant
« on: Friday 04 March 22 12:47 GMT (UK)  »
I have a death cert, possibly my 2xgt. grandfather who died in Kensington Infirmary.  The informant was the acting steward of the infirmary.

If I have the correct man then his wife and daughter were still alive;  would the officials of the infirmary have been the informants for all deaths there or only those without family?

Occupation Interests / Thames Watermen & Lightermen
« on: Tuesday 06 July 21 14:03 BST (UK)  »
I have a transcription for Jno Hardy (Hardee) of Greenhithe.

It shows a bound date of 7 March 1799 and a free date of 16 December 1819.  The Master shown as William Hardy.

Twenty years seems like a very long apprenticeship;  or was that usual?

The Common Room / Martha goes missing
« on: Thursday 29 April 21 10:10 BST (UK)  »
I have lost sight of Martha Catherine Garside (b 29 January 1854, Sheffield); daughter of Henry and Martha Catherine.   Henry died 1890 and Martha in 1903;  her Will written in 1898 does not mention daughter Martha but does mention all her other surviving children.

Martha junior was last sighted in 1891 census working as a Nurse Matron at the Cottage Hospital, Bocking, Braintree in Essex.

Any suggestions as to where she might be?  I'm guessing that she might have died before her mother's Will was written in 1898 but not convinced.  :-\

The Common Room / DEATH Penny needs a home
« on: Sunday 04 April 21 12:59 BST (UK)  »
A friend has set this challenge!

A WW1 death penny rescued from being scrapped in Thatcham around 1976.

Lance Naik   Bale Rana Niga   died 18 September 1918.

Son of Hangsu Persad Rana of Junia, Gulmi, Palpa, Nepal.

On the CWGC site he is shown as being attached to 1stBn, 2nd King Edward's Own Gurkha Rifles.

There is a Gurkha community in the Berkshire area so possibly he had/still has family there.

Can Rootschatters find them?  He would like to return it to them.

Technical Help / iPad "storage full" pop up
« on: Tuesday 30 March 21 11:59 BST (UK)  »
My ancient (in tech terms) iPad is about 8 years old and I keep getting "storage full" pop ups.  I try to keep mail boxes emptied and only store photos on there.

Is it time to discard it or is there a way to deal with this?

Very basic terms please as I am a technophobe.   ::)

Thanks.  :)

Technical Help / Headset for a Tablet
« on: Sunday 03 January 21 10:20 GMT (UK)  »
I've joined a few Zoom events via my tablet but the sound quality varies.  :(

Would a headset improve this and does anyone have any recommendations......or ones to avoid?  I don't need anything fancy.

Technical Help / Lost BBC text on tv
« on: Tuesday 24 November 20 11:47 GMT (UK)  »
Samsung tv, bought May2017.  Noticed a couple of days ago that the text facility is now "not available".

We did have a very brief loss of power a few days ago;  could that have affected the tv?  I've not seen any details in the press about the text facility being unavailable.   :-\

It's just a basic freeview set, not signed up to anything like Sky etc.
