Surrey / Alice Carder
« on: Saturday 27 February 21 02:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hope someone may be able to help here.

I am trying to find a birth or christening for Alice Augusta Carder who was born in Forest Hill, Surrey in about 1876 or 1877. Alice married my  great grandfather Harry William Richardson in Fulham in 1898 and died in Watford, Hertfordshire in 1909.

Can anyone help here?

Kent / Frederick C Richardson 1884
« on: Saturday 27 February 21 02:01 GMT (UK)  »
I hope someone can help here. I am trying to find the christening of Frederick Charles Richardson who was born on 9 August 1884 possibly in the Kennington area of Kent. Frederick was my grandfather's uncle and I have his date of birth from a family bible/journal which includes the birth dates of all Frederick's siblings and their children.

Frederick's parents were James Keene Richardson and Mary Ann Spice who married in Ashford at the Weslyan Chapel in 1868. All of their children were born in either Boughton Aluph or Kennington and presumably christened in those parishes as well.

Can anyone identify where Frederick was born or even christened?

Alternatively can anyone find him on the 1939 Register or 1911 census. I have found two Frederick C Richardsons in the 1939 Register but they are both in Yorkshire and the dates of birth don't match with what I have.

Many Thanks

Somerset / Sarah Lewis and John Dyke [Dike]
« on: Saturday 20 February 21 01:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hope someone can help here.

I'm trying to identify christenings for my ancestor John Dyke and Sarah Lewis who married in Taunton in 1733 by licence.

I don't know where John was from yet but I have found a possible candidate for Sarah:

Sarah Lewis christened 1716 Wincanton - daughter of Benjamin and Hannah

My only query is that Wincanton seems quite a distance away. Could this be the same Sarah or can anyone suggest candidates closer to Taunton that I should look at?

I've tried looking for Wills for the Lewis family but so far I've not come across anything that may help.

Many Thanks for any ideas

Alternative where can I download a map online?

Many thanks

Kent / John Smith - Is this him?
« on: Saturday 20 February 21 01:47 GMT (UK)  »
It may be a long shot with a name like "John Smith" but hopefully someone can help here.

My ancestor John Smith married Elizabeth Rigden at Hambledown in October 1761.

I have been trying for some time to locate his christening and so far the only one I can find is for a John Smith christened in Faversham in 1737 [son of George and Sarah].

Could this be the same man? I'm not totally sure how far the two parishes are from each other.

What do you think? Can anyone suggest any other possible candidates?

Many Thanks
Matt

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Kittell?
« on: Sunday 14 February 21 22:02 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone can help me confirm what the surname of the child christened in the second line starting "28 daye was baptised Joane ......"

I think her surname could be Kittell or possibly Littell. I have been trying to locate a christening in this parish and this time frame for a Joan Kittell for a while without luck, I have her surname from various transcripts but those all say "Kittell" so if this is "Little" maybe I'm looking for the wrong people.

Kent / Allens in Puckley
« on: Friday 12 February 21 15:00 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone here might be able to help me make some progress with my Allen ancestors in Pluckley.

My ancestor Farley Allen was christened in Pluckley on 6 December 1747 and was described as the "baseborn" daughter of Elizabeth Allen in the parish register.

The only other entry I can find for an Allen christening is for a William Allen son of Thomas and Elizabeth christened on 5 July 1742.

Could this Elizabeth and the Elizabeth who was the mother of Farley be the same person? There is a gap between William and Farley and I've often wondered if Thomas died and then Elizabeth ended  up having another child.

Alternatively could Elizabeth and Thomas have been siblings? I don't know if Elizabeth was an "Allen" by marriage or birth at the moment. So far I haven't found any other Allens in the area.

Can anyone offer any ideas or suggestions on this?

Many Thanks

Kent / Thomas Rigden
« on: Friday 12 February 21 01:30 GMT (UK)  »
I'm wondering if someone here might be able to find any information about my ancestor Thomas Rigden, in particular a potential year of birth/christening.

Thomas Rigden married a woman named Alice Wambsley at Faversham on 29 November 1729. At the time of marriage she was described as a widow. Alice was born Alice Amis in 1698 and had previously been married to Edward Wamblsey in December 1720 at Faversham. I've found no children for Edward and Alice and Edward died in December 1727 and was buried on 30 December 1727.

Thomas and Alice themselves had five children who were all christened in Faversham:

Thomas Rigden - March 1730
John Rigden - April 1732
Elizabeth Rigden - January 1737 [my ancestor]
William Rigden - February 1737
Joseph Rigden - April 1739

Thomas Rigden snr died in 1749 leaving a will but the only person he names in this is his wife Alice.

If anyone can help me build up a bigger picture for the Rigdens or give me an idea where Thomas may have originated I'd be very grateful.

Many Thanks

Kent / Alice Luson/Lewson c1630s or 1640s
« on: Tuesday 09 February 21 20:01 GMT (UK)  »
This is a follow up to a couple of messages I posted in 2018 and 2019.

I am trying to locate an ancestor of mine named Alice Luson who married William Amis [also spelt Amos] at Oare in 1663.

So far I have only located one christening for an Alice Luson in the area:

Alice Luson
Christened 21 September 1637
Parents: Samuel and Katherine

There is an Alice Luson daughter of Samuel who was buried in Kent on 13 October 1639. This is on Familysearch and although it doesn't state a parish, a check of the film number shows that Oare is included in the film.

So far I haven't been able to find any other Alice Lusons in the area at all. I did wonder if she might have been a widow when she married William but again I've not been able to prove this.

I know that Samuel Luson born in Harty in 1605 [son of Richard] who appears to have married twice. It looks like his first marriage was to a woman named Bennett Nethersole on 14 April 1631 at Faversham. I have just found a burial for Bennett Nethersole wife of Samuel dated 22 April 1631 also at Faversham so it looks like this marriage didn't last very long or produce any children. This marriage took place by Licence.

Then on 11 September 1631 he married Alice Hickes of Boughton under Blean also by Licence at Boughton under Blean. After checking on Findmypast I've found that the Licence appears to be dated 2 September 1631.

Also I found a note in the marriage entry on FindMyPast  today which says:

"LEWSON or TEWSON shown as Sam in lic and John in PR. She d of John, yeoman"

So I'm not sure if he was a Luson, Lewson or Teswon now lol!

I've only found two children born to this Samuel [or John] and Alice:

Elizabeth Luson christened at Oare on 7 September 1634.

William Luson christened at Oare on 26 July 1640.

Although I haven't yet found a death/burial for Samuel I was wondering if he might have died between 1640 and 1663 and then his widow Alice [Hickes] married William Amis as "Alice Luson"

This seems to be the only logical conclusion if we assume that the Alice christened in Oarein 1637 died in 1639.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to work this out? Does anyone have any ideas on how I can identify my Alice?

Thanks
Matt
