Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Please help with surname
« on: Sunday 11 February 24 08:50 GMT (UK)  »
I agree that context might help.

I think I can make out some letters but together they don’t make much sense. It looks like it starts with an R.. - possibly Ro… there are several possibilities eg Romigie, Rornig e or u. Would you expect this to be a “non English” surname?

Is there any other writing you can show us for comparision? Is the date 1867? Is this in the back of a photo as suggested by bearcat?

Scotland / Re: Bell family in Scotland.
« on: Saturday 10 February 24 05:24 GMT (UK)  »
Bell was a very common surname in that area of Scotland and also NE England. I have some Bells from Northumberland. My brother in law has some from Dumfriesshire.

You need to take care that you are tracing the correct lines.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry DNA membership features active
« on: Saturday 03 February 24 00:06 GMT (UK)  »
Free members now have
No more than 2 shared matches shown
No maternal/Paternal labelling
No ability to look at how common ancestors are connected
No view of any tree

I’m not impressed.

It is one thing for future DNA testers to not have these features, if they are aware of them when taking the test.

To remove such basic features as these for people who tested previously believing they had access to these features, is pretty disgusting in my view.

Added: I just looked at my pathetic two “matches” and clicked through to see what would happen if I wanted to view more matches - was taken to a subscription page and was offered three months Worldwide subscription for AUD$1, which I took up. I will cancel before the autorenewal.

Apologies if this has already been asked, and I missed it …. Was your matches mother married when she gave birth to your match? If not, presumably your match must have been illegitimate, and if so, does her birth cerificate give a father’s name?

If your father has any living siblings who would be willing to take a DNA test, their results shoild give you more confirmation if you need it.

trying to piece together both your father's and their mother's movements around the time they were born.

Conceived rather than born I think.  :)

Cimota, you and your match can probably work out a fairly accurate time that your father and her mother would have “met”. As your father is no longer alive are there any family members who may be able to tell you his movements around this time? Your contact will have to do the same regarding her mother’s movements. Is her mother still alive?

There may even be stories or rumours as there sometimes are within families. You may not wish to reveal any of this to your families …. so asking questions may not be possible, though you may still be able to do some subtle digging.

If you are willing to do so please let us know if you manage to solve the mystery. I wish you well.

Ethnicity estimates are really just an estimate, and in this example, aren’t really relevant.

As you and your mystery match both have matches with cousins on your paternal line, your connection is obviously on that line. It looks like aunt/uncle or half sibling relationship are the most likely.

I suggest testing at least one of your and your matches siblings, which may clarify. Is your father still alive? Even better! Consider testing him, which should give you the answer to the half sibling question.

The more family who test the clearer it is likley to become. Do you have any other close cousins on your father’s side, apart from the one who is a match to you and your mystery match? Test them if possible to clarify any aunt/uncle relationship.

Failing that, look at your father and your matches’ mother’s movements around that time. If you are half siblings, the parents must have met up somewhere. Also look at the movements of your father’s brothers … and the movement of your match’s mother of course.

Does your match have any siblings who have tested? Are they also a match to you?

Just a few suggestions …. I’m sure others will have more.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Scandinavian shock!

Don’t expect to get many matches in France arena, DNA testing in France is illegal, it’s only allowed for medical reasons and paternity.

OH has French family members who had no trouble buying a DNA test. One of them was surprised when I told him I thought they were illegal.  :)

Wexford / Re: Murphys : Railway family from Wexford
« on: Tuesday 16 January 24 00:04 GMT (UK)  »
I know this is an old thread, but I’m wondering if any of you Murphy descendants have taken DNA tests.

I have Murphy ancestors from Wexford. Mary Murphy (presumably) married Denis Connor some time before 1864, as their daughter, my ancestor, Mary Jane Connor was born “about” 1864.

Apart from the names and her place of birth as “Wexford, Wexford” I know nothing about the Murphys. Other family were born in New Ross.

Investigating DNA might be interesting.  :)

That looks promising Neale.

Have you considered taking a DNA test lorelei? Even better if you could trace Robert the Surgeon’s family line down to the present day and if possible contact one of them to see if they would be willing to test. There you would have your proof - probably.  ;D
