To all the lovely posters and restorers,
It's been a rotten year, let's hope it is coming to an end at last.

Occupation Interests / Re: Tailors - How did they live and work?
« on: Sunday 28 March 21 23:19 BST (UK)  »
I'm still here, and still making discoveries.
Before, I was wondering why Grandfather William made the trip from Pembroke Dock to Reading. Since seeing one of the census returns, I find he didn't go straight to Reading, but ended up in Basingstoke with Grandmother Harriet and a couple of their kids ... shush, don't tell anyone they lied when they said they were married.
So why did he go from Pembroke Dock to Basingstoke? I know he worked for Burberrys, he did, mother did, I did, and anyone who stitches those khaki trench coats has my sympathy. That problem is now solved. Burberrys first opened in Basingstoke, a magnet for tailors.
But if that is so, I now have a new problem, what the what was Gran Harriet doing in Basingstoke?

One thing about Family History, you never finish finding out things and being surprised.
Hope you have as much fun and learn as much on here as I have Jonosue

I don't gp any further than Mary, Claire. I tend to only do the direct line. If I didn't I'd have more than a tablecloth sized family tree.
I still haven't made any progress in finding where the Rev Ric Purchas  came from. He and wife Ruth had children Sarah and Matthew somewhere, they died in Winslow 1687 and 1680. While in Winslow Rev Ric and wife Ruth had Richard, Ruth and Elizabeth who went on to marry John Denchfield. Rev Ric was not married in Winslow and neither he nor Ruth were born there. Would love to know where they came from. There was a Rev John Purchas, vicar of St James the Great, Bierton in 1561, but that's 100 years adrift. I can't seem to find anyone nearer.
You're right, it has been years, but the Denchfields can still get us wound up and ready to go.

I have Mary (1748) daughter of John and Elizabeth, married to David Warr born 1747.
They married 9th Sept 1771 in St Mary's North Marston.
I could find no more about David.

If you would like to go back from Mathew Denchfield, try Richarde Denchfield (1570) married Margaret Ingram (1587) in 1601 at St Mary's North Marstom. His father was Gefferie Denchfield (1550) The line runs cold for me there. I have no record of a wife for Gefferie.

Hope this helps

Nice to be back, Gadget.  Probably won't do a lot, but I have really missed dropping in.
Things seem to be getting back under control here, but I still need new spec ... one day ... we can dream ...

My pleasure.
I only learnt how to work the magic because so many kind RootsChatters  restored some of my photos.
I use a program called Gimp ... it's free. As I can only do a little now it isn't worth paying for something, and the results come up fairly good.
It's a fiddle to learn, but well worth the effort.
Best of luck,
Paula
