Armed Forces / 1901 Deserter
« on: Saturday 04 April 20 15:54 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Thirlwell Age:18. Birth Year: Abt 1883. Birth Place: S. Andrews, Sunderld
Desertion Date: 23 Feb 1901. Desertion Place:York
Publication Date:12 Mar 1901. Regimental Number: 7320
Military Corps: 3rd Nrthmb Fus.

There is the above record for a Thomas Thirlwell deserting in 1901. I cannot see the full record on Ancestry (need a Fold3 sub) and there does not appear to be a copy on FindMyPast.

What I would like to know if possible is where and how I can find out more particularly if it names his father and what became of this i.e. was he fined \ punished. I am assuming the "S. Andrews, Sunderld" above is a bad transcription and should be St Andrews, Scotland as the person I am interested in was born at Hoddom which is about 5 miles from St Andrews.

Thank you

Kent / Edward Bassant & Ann Maria Crayden marriage 1861-1871
« on: Sunday 22 March 20 20:06 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone find a marriage for Edward Bassant and Ann Maria Crayden (sometimes Maria Ann Crayden). Both names give rise to spelling variations. The couple have a daughter Sarah Ann White Bassant baptised 1866 at Bapchild. I would expect the marriage to be in the Milton \ Sittingbourne \ bapchild area.

Thank you

Durham / Dougharty \ Dockerty in 1891 & 1901
« on: Saturday 07 March 20 22:32 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone see the Dougharty \ Dockerty (or similar spellings) family on the 1891 or 1901 census.

There is a marriages in Dec quarter 1889 at Chester Le Street  of Francis Dougharty and Margaret Ditchborne (Ditchburn?). This couple have at least two children, Margaret registered 1890 and Catherine Ann registered in 1893 (born 1892). Catherine survives as she marries (as Dockerty) in 1920 and I think I have her in 1911 but I can not find any of the family in 1891 or 1901.

I would expect them to be in or near Chester Le Street (possibly Usworth) at least in 1891 as that is where both daughters were born.

(I do not know the birth dates of Francis or Margaret Snr or where born but possibly both born c1871 given the 1937 deaths for a Margaret and Francis)

Thank you

Added: And there is a daughter Frances Dockerty MMN Ditchburn born 1894 C-L-S as above and still alive in 1911

Durham / Placename: Cashaw, Durham?
« on: Sunday 01 March 20 15:01 GMT (UK)  »
On the 1861 census there is an Isabella Burdon (nee Irwin) 33 born Cashaw, Durham. The census clearly says Cashaw, does anyone have any idea what this might be.

I have found her baptism in 1827 and the abode then is given as Harraton in the Chester Le Street district. I had wondered if Cashaw could be Ushaw (Ushaw Moor) but that seems to far away and does not tie in with the baptism.

On the 1851 she only gives her birthplace as Durham, and don't know where she after 1861, either dead, gone back to America or remarried perhaps?

Any ideas what Cashaw is supposed to be.

Thank you

London and Middlesex / Orpingley Road, Hornsey Road, London
« on: Saturday 15 February 20 18:43 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone locate Orpingley Road for me please.

On the 1911 census the address is entered as "Orpingley Road, Hornsey Road, London" and on the 1939 registration as  Orpingley Road.

I have had a look for it on maps and cannot find it and I cannot find a record of it changing its name.

If you need a name to find it on the census or registration record the Mary A Gammage born c1880 should do it.

Thank you

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Arthur Coborn (Cockburn)'s parentage
« on: Tuesday 11 February 20 17:15 GMT (UK)  »
Arthur was born 1878. ARTHUR COCKBURN,   MMN COLLINS
GRO Reference: 1878  Dec Quarter in GUISBROUGH  Volume 09D  Page 514

However there is not a marriage of a George Cockburn and Mary Ann Collins but there is a marriage of a George Cockburn and Mary Ann Maffan in 1872.
Marriages Dec 1872   at Guisbrough RD Vol 9d Page 996
George COCKBURN and Mary Ann Maffan

The couple have several children and they all have the mother’s maiden name of Maffin (or similar) except Arthur in 1878 and Rose in 1893 who have Collins. This is a puzzle

Children
John William Cockburn      1873   Guisbrough   MMN Maffin
Annie Elizabeth Cockburn   1875   Guisbrough   MMN Muffin
Jane Ann Cockburn      1876   Gusibrough   MMN Maffin
Arthur Cockburn      1878   Guisbrough   MMN Collins
Thomas Cockburn      1881   Guisbrough   MMN Maffin
Ada Cockburn         1884   Guisbrough   MMN Maffin
Alice Cockburn         1884   Guisbrough   MMN Maffin
George Ernest Cockburn   1886   Guisbrough   MMN Maffin
Rose Anna Cockburn      1889   Guisbrough   MMN Collins
(Charles) Albert Cockburn   1892   Whitby      MMN Maffin
Edith May Cockburn      1896   Whitby      MMN Maffan

So why do Arthur and Rose have the MMN Collins ?

In 1881 the family are in the Guisbrough RD, George Cockburn is 29 and Mary Ann 27

In 1891 the family are in the Whitby RD, George Cowburn is 40 and Mary Ann is 37

In 1901 George Cockburn and the younger children are in Whitby RD, George is 50 and Mary Ann is 47

Question Can anyone come up with an explanation why Arthur and Rose have the MMN of Collins rather than Maffin?
