Family History Beginners Board / Re: Advice on making my ancestry tree public
« on: Sunday 29 August 21 15:42 BST (UK)  »
1. There is a tree on Ancestry which includes the living brothers of my ex-husband, I contacted the owner and they made ex-husband private but the others are all still there, also there is one containing my living cousins.

2. I don't have my tree on Ancestry but I do help people where I can, on another thread I have read that a tree has been altered, presumably without permission, I prefer to have control over my work.
rayard.

Are you sure you have that correct?

Re 1. Are you sure? Are they really his brothers or merely names that coincide with those of his brothers without giving specific identifying information such as birth dates and locations.

Re 2. As was pointed out in that other thread perhaps the tree owner could have unwittingly given someone editing rights and it is that person who altered the tree. We should not really cast aspersions when we have no proof should we?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry DNA v My Heritage DNA
« on: Saturday 14 August 21 16:11 BST (UK)  »
IMO neither of them is bonkers and neither of them is likely to be 100 % correct.

They work simply by comparing your results with their databases some of which have very small sample sizes for some areas. As the two companies use different populations and population sizes it should not be a surprise when differences arise, rather they should be expected.

Remember there is nothing on your DNA that says where you come from its all assumption based on comparison of similar results in others which may or may not be correct.

Very impressive Dan. Congratulations on finding out what became of him.

I have been reading the thread with interest and do like it when things go well.

The Common Room / Re: Freebmd birth not on GRO website

I had no luck either.

I would report it to them so they can investigate and if it is missing they will add it. However do not know how long that will take with the current Covid restrictions on staff etc

Thank you for your reply.

In my case that is not what has happened. What has happened is that records such as BMD details have been deleted but they are still on the system and I can add them again. Also in some cases whilst the link to the information is still on my tree where i wrote those details on my tree has been deleted which i think is most strange.

Thank you also to those who answered the poll.

The Common Room / Ancestry - Disappearing records
« on: Friday 16 July 21 13:55 BST (UK)  »
I am asking this question as I am convinced I have seen records disappearing from mine and other people's trees on Ancestry and I would be interested in other peoples experiences.

The Common Room / Re: Possible for birth records to be "disappeared" from GRO?
« on: Wednesday 14 July 21 12:51 BST (UK)  »
In the past I have found several birth registrations that are on freeBMD etc either missing from GRO or mistranscribed. What I have done is report them to GRO and if they can find them (which they usually can as i provide the freeBMD reference etc) they then update their site.

Unfortunately this was before Covid hit and the updating of their site seems to have come to a bit of a halt as far as I can see.

I've found this too, but I don't think this is the case here. Three siblings vanish, one in one district and two in another. I'm no longer a member of Ancestry or FindMyPast. but they're stlll on there on the free search

Have you contacted GRO to see what they say, although i appreciate it may take some time to get a reply under current circumstances.
