London and Middlesex / Hislop Family
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 23:33 GMT (UK)  »

 Hello Fellow Roots Chatters,
I am trying to find  Hislop family who lived in London and surrounds. The original family was Richard Hislop ( a Bookbinder from Glasgow )who married Susan Kail. Their children , Thomas Hislop 1865 :  Walter George Hislop 1871 ; Isabella Bowie Hislop 1874 ; Charles Ernest Hislop 1878 and William Bowie J Hislop 1868 ( died in infancy).
Thomas 1865 married Emily Allen. Walter George 1871 married Nellie Alice Thompson . Isabella 1874 married Frederick James and Charles Ernest 1878 married Eliza Jane Hurley.
Would love to hear from anyone who has some of these folk in their tree.
                                                  Regards, Jean Hislop

Lanarkshire / Episcopal Church Records
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 05:46 GMT (UK)  »
Having spent 5/6 frustrating years trying to find other descendants of my GG Grandparents Archibald Beattie + Margaret Lindsay and their daughter Margaret Beattie 1815 ( my G Grandmother ) - Finally a breakthrough !!

I have found many other members of this family about whom I knew nothing. Their names were not in the records on Scotland`s People. The reason :- they were baptised in the Episcopal ( Church of England ) Church prior to 1855.
The church involved in my case was  ST ANDREWS BY THE GREEN , Glasgow. Another family member working from here in Australia was able to substantiate their existence because the family members he knew of came to Australia as " Bounty Immigrants " and a church record ( baptism / record from a Minister ) was pivotal to acceptance as an assisted immigrant.
He discovered that these records were in the safe keeping of the Glasgow and West of Scotland  Society ( might not have that title exactly )and with the assistance of a very determined Scots lady in Glasgow - SHE WENT to ASK ABOUT THOSE RECORDS THREE TIMES AND WAS FINALLY GRANTED ACCESS , he was able to find some of the detail that had eluded us for so long.
The records of which I speak were stored on the top floor of the building.
I would hope they are now available or about to be so.
If you are looking for Episcopal Church records pre 1855 - that could be a place to start.

Lanarkshire / Pigot& Co Directory of Scotland 1825/26
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 03:28 BST (UK)  »

Hi Roots Chatters,
No , I don`t have one , sadly, but several years ago , somebody who did have access to one found my G G Grandfather , Richard Hislop ( spelt Heslop - it is an English directory ) in it. I can`t recall who that person was who provided such wonderful information - silly me !
Having recently broken down one of those BRICKWALLS that we encounter, I would love to find somebody who could look for a family of Cordwainers / Boot & Shoe makers by the name of Beattie in Glasgow.
My GG Grandfather, Archibald Beattie ( other spellings are possible - Beaty , Beatie , even Beith ) was a Shoemaker Master ( so he would have employed others ) and a John Beattie had a Boot / Shoe Warehouse in London Street ( later, London Road).
Archibald Beattie sired children that I know of between  James 1807 and Archibald 1831 , so  he could be in the Pigot`s Directories of the time.
As I live in Australia, I`m not likely to pop in to the Mitchell Library for a look, so rely on some generous soul to look for me.
                                                        Regards, Thommoje

Argyllshire / The Burgesses of Inveraray
« on: Saturday 31 July 10 04:08 BST (UK)  »

 Hi Argyll Roots Chatters,
                                       I have obtained a copy of the Scottish Record Society `s book - " the Burgesses of Inveraray  1665 - 1963 ".
The burgesses and freemen  are listed chronologically and alphabetically. Not much other detail is given but in many cases, the occupation of the person is given.
I would be happy to look up names for anyone trying to confirm an ancestor`s connection to the Royal Burgh of Inveraray 1665 - 1963.
                                        Cheers, Thommoje

Argyllshire / Photos , Photos , Photos
« on: Monday 15 March 10 21:03 GMT (UK)  »

  Hello RootsChatters,
I live in Australia and am probably not going to have the  chance to go and see Argyllshire for myself.
There is , however , a wonderful site called GEOGRAPH BRITISH ISLES where the aim is to photograph almost anything within each square kilometre of Britain. It is so easy to use - just type in the search box - anywhere near -------- ( your little village , town , bay , hill  or whatever )  and it is amazing how much comes up. I have been able to see views of places in Argyllshire and all over which give me a wonderful sense of where my folk are from.
Give it a try and enjoy. It is a wonderful project and provided it is for personal use , you can copy photos. I have even contacted photographers who have sent me extra shots.

Aberdeenshire / Joseph Rae Glass + Janet Rae
« on: Sunday 16 November 08 01:54 GMT (UK)  »

Joseph Rae Glass and Janet Rae moved from Glasgow to live out their lives in Aberdeen. Joseph was a Ham Curer / Fancy -box cutter. He was also a clever caricaturist and we have a couple of his drawings.
There were several "wee Glasses " :- Thomas b 1902 who married Catherine Ann Mitchell in 1925 ; Mary Margaret b1904 ; Samuel ( Sammy ) and Sarah that I know of so far. Sarah married --- King and lived at 24 Esslemont Avenue , Aberdeen in 1950.
The family home was still 10 Northfield Place , Aberdeen in 1950 when Janet ( Jenny ) died.
I have so far failed to pick up the modern day thread of this family - somebody out there knows.
Would love to hear from somebody who knows more.

Lanarkshire / Isabella Bowie Hardie Wilson MILLER
« on: Monday 13 October 08 03:42 BST (UK)  »

 Now there`s a mouthful.
Isabella Bowie Hardie Wilson was born in 1866 in Anderston , Glasgow to James Wilson + Jeanie Hislop.
Her name acknowledged her Grandmother and Great Grandmother `s names on the Hislop side of the family.
In 1890 she married John Miller and she lived to 92 yrs , dying in Partick in 1958.
Like so many of our family , she didn`t move far within the Glasgow area - Hillhead - Maryhill - Partick.
I am hoping that somebody recognises the name of a lady who lived for so long in a confined area of Glasgow. I believe there was a son John ( Jack) born c 1892 but know of no other children.
Hoping to find somebody who can help fill some gaps.
