Armed Forces / Re: 25th Foot in Dundee?

Hi Ken

Many thanks for this information. Had a little look at the online stuff on the NA site but no sign of a George Morrison and not much on the Angus Militia beyond 1835. Muster books and papers seem to be split between Kew and Scotland so I think this is one I will leave for another day.

I really appreciate your help Ken. Thank you.

Hi Annie and Ken

Many thanks for this information - its a bit of a strange one. This is the information I have:

1861 George Morrison is in the Raglan Barracks Married Men's Quarters in Stoke Demerel, Devonport with his wife Margaret Tracy who is from Cork.

Between 1869 and 1872 he is in the Dundee Directories with an occupation of Drill Instructor, Drill Hall and lives at 3 Mid Street in Dundee.

In the 1871 census he is still living at 3 Mid Street in the St Clement district of Dundee with his wife and two sons, one born in England about 1861 and one born in Dundee 1867. His occupation is given as volunteer instructor.

In 1879 his death certificate, age 52, says he was a Sergeant with the 61st Foot.

I wonder if the registrar made a mistake on the death certificate - is it strange for a Scottish man to be in a Gloucestershire regiment? Also it looks, from the link you sent to me Annie, that the Gloucesters were in India for a very long time, from 1845 until 1860. I can't find a marriage record for him.

Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

Can anyone tell me about the 61st Foot? Sorry to butt in on the thread but I thought whilst the experts are here, I would ask.

Hi Annie, nice to see you - how you doin'?

Moli, if you have emailed me - I have to tell you that my email is down, bloomin' virgin media - its been dodgy for a few weeks and just conked out this morning. I'll get back to you when I'm able to access my emails again.

Hi Moli

One of my relatives was a drill instructor at Dudhope Castle in Dundee in the 1860s and 1870s. He was a sergeant with the 61st Foot. So I would imagine that various different groups of soldiers from different units were probably stationed there on garrison duty.

I have some pictures of Dudhope Castle, including one of a group of soldiers taken about 1870, and a map showing the location (its not there any longer). If you would like copies of these just send me a pm with your email address.

Thank you very much for the Map, Tony. The family's children were all christened in St Paul's Church in St Paul's Square so this must be the right Parry's Court.

The Lighter Side / Re: Do You Have twins in your family?
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 23:49 BST (UK)  »
Both me and my husband have twins in our families and we have twin boys ourselves (or should I say men - they are 31 now!) Strangely both sides are fraternal twins - so we don't see double.

The first lot of twins on my husband's side are in 1644 - they both died within days and then in 1655 the second lot of twins survived. Both sets to the same parents. The first twins on my side, that I know about, are in 1829 - one survived and one didn't. Since then there have been quite a few twins on both sides - none identical. My poor daughter is really excited at the thought that she might be the next to have twins!  :o

Occupation Interests / Re: Post office workers look up
« on: Tuesday 21 October 08 23:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi Gill

Not sure if anyone else can do this look up for you, but I got my great grandads records from the British Postal Museum and Archive in London. I had to go and get them myself. If you have a look at this website, it will tell you what information you need and how to go about getting the records.

My great grandad worked for the Post Office in Liverpool as well, from 1886 to 1928. If you know the date of retirement it makes it a lot easier to find the records. I don't think the Archive gets a lot of visitors and they are very helpful.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jean

Don't know if this is any help but the IGI has a christening for Thomas Youds in St Peter, Liverpool on 12 May 1805 (birth 16 Februrary 1805). Father is Henry Youds, mother Mary Potter.
