Hello Milly.

Welcome to RootsChat !   May I say you must be the oldest member at 143 (see, I DO read peoples profiles) ... so the ancestors you can remember must go back further than ours !!

I hope you can cope with the peculiarities of the people on here ... do we need to shout ??

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Glad to have you on board !

I guess you know you're an addict when you fill your birthdate in as 1863 instead of 1963!! All fixed now.   :) :)

Lancashire / Re: manchester burial records - web site
« on: Monday 29 January 07 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
I've been using it a fair bit and solved quite a few family mysteries... including discovering the names of my father's grandparent's and his aunt (for some reason no one in the family ever knew their first names), and locating the grave of his brother who died in infancy... which brought a few tears to a few eyes.

One thing to be aware of is that the grave numbers can relate to various different sections of the cemeteries...ie conformist, non conformist etc... so when you see a list of people listed under one grave number it doesn't mean that they are definitely all buried together.

And yes.. you have to be SO careful when opening the records.  If you are not really careful you have no choice but to go backwards to the previous page ...which means losing another credit.  But on the positive side - when there was a problem with a page not opening and I lost loads of credits a lovely lady answered my e-mail and refunded all my credits. ;D

Hello everyone - I'm new(ish) to the the site and just thought I'd pop into the Common Room to say "hi" to you all.  :)

I knew I was addicted when the control button fell off my keyboard from too many cut and pastes of various bits of census info "just in case I might need it later".

World War One / Re: Is this WW1 uniform?
« on: Saturday 27 January 07 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
Another unidentified rellie.  Is this a WW1 uniform?

Many thanks.

Nanny Jan

Having asked my resident military expert (ie the other half)...I am reliably informed that this chappie  is wearing 1903 Pattern Tunic and a 1908 Pattern Great coat as issued to the volunteers of 1914/15. He was  "in all probability" part of the Kitcheners 1914 volunteers (as in Pal's Battallions).  Due to the high number of volunteers at the time most people were only issued uniform without badges (including cap badges) apart from the occasional tin badge on the lapel. There's a book called Kitchener's Army by Ray Westlake - published 1989 which contains lots of info but specifically pictures of soldiers wearing very similar uniforms - also without cap badges. I've had a look and the caps are exactly the same.

He does look a little older than the youngsters we are used to seeing in photos but there are some pictures of older men in this book. Perhaps he was an old regular who was keen to enlist? Or just looks older than he is.

Hope that helps
