Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage Lookup for Saint Clements Hastings Please.
« on: Friday 13 November 09 12:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am so sick and tired of this Cephas!!!! I was told to check out the Attree website and discovered a Cephas Tree of Hastings B:c1720 son of Stephen Tree of Street. Where is Street? Is it in Sussex?
There is a Tree family in Hastings - several entries for marriages on the SMI but no Cephas as already stated. Have you looked at the original settlement order at East Sussex Record Office? It may hold more clues.
Andrea
Can the certificates be ordered? as being in Australia its a bit hard to get there, I looked at it on line and all it says is :
Church of England,Hasting St Clements Parish,East Sussex, Overseers of the Poor Settlement Certificate 5th July 1750, Cephas Tree(ropemaker) wife Mary and children Cephas 4 and Martha 2. Brighton. Does the original have more information?
Cheers
Jo

Hi Andrea

Where to start, well I know that my ancestor was Cephas Tree B: c1756 he married Mary Kent in Brighton 1777. That much I am sure of.On their marriage certificate the witness is Martha and Thomas Simpson, Martha Tree married a Thomas Simpson in Brighton, so I assume this is Cephas' sister.
Now I have been given information that has a Cephas and Mary Tree in Hastings with a son Cephas and daughter Martha given a settlement certificate July 5 1750, St Clements Parish to Brighton.
I have seen on Ancestry that a Cephas and Mary Tree from Hastings have a daughter Ann B: 1751 , Mary B:1752, Betty B:1754 all born in Hastings but no record of Cephas.
My auntie believes that our Cephas' parent were the ones from Hastings B:c 1730, their record for marriage is on IGI and so is the birth of Betty, but no others on the IGI,(which I don't really trust for right information anyway)
So I am trying to find out the marriage for this Cephas B:1730 in Hastings.
I can't find the death for Cephas B: c 1756 either.

HI Jenn

I know that her daughter Martha married a Edward Green in Victoria but I don't think there is a record for it, Martha and Edward had a few children before he died in 1861, and she remarried in 1862 to James Pullen at Yackandandah and they lived at Sandy Creek. On Martha's death certificate it states she was first married when she was 16.
The other daughter Sarah listed as age 22 on James Terry's death certificate I haven't searched for yet and their son John was born in 1851 I haven't searched for him yet either.

Hi all

Thanks Kris what a great job! very much appreciated.

I am ordering the death certificate for Sarah Hunt in 1861 NSW to check that out.

I haven't found a death for William Hunt either. I am now looking for his death to see how old he was and where he was buried. Then I will look to see if Sarah remarried.

Thanks everyone for the help I'm sure with all the help Sarah will be found.

Cheers

Thanks every one,

All I could make out on the names is west, I know she came from Surrey England, I have attached a copy of the certificate as I can't read where William is living at, and also I can't read what Sarah's rank or profession is. If I can get an idea of where they were it might help me.

When did it become law in Australia to register births?

On Sarah's first husbands death certificate from 1854 it states his eldest daughter as Sarah age 22, which makes her DOB 1832, Sarah and John Terry were married in 1836, so either one or the other were married before or they had their daughter out of wedlock. Does that sound right???

HI

I have no idea when she arrived all I know is that she married John Terry in 1836 in Sydney moved to Victoria in 1850 had a son John Terry Born 1850 in Victoria and was a widow in 1854 she then married William Hunt in 1855, on that marriage certificate it lists that she has 5 deceased children and 3 living, I know of the 3 living but have no idea who the other 5 are, maybe she was married when she came to Australia, I don't know.Although on her 1st marriage certificate it states she is a spinster. She is becoming more and more a mystery to me.

Cheers
