Suffolk Resources & Links / Bungay Church Photographs
« on: Sunday 22 April 07 11:11 BST (UK)  »
These are a few pictures of the church at Bungay, Suffolk.  This lovely old church is redundant and we were told that the town isn't interested in preserving it.  I find that hard to believe.

These are a few of the pics I took today at St Michael & St Felix, Rumburgh, which is a charming village in Suffolk, not far from Bungay.

Suffolk Resources & Links / St Andrew's Bramfield - Memorial Photographs
« on: Saturday 21 April 07 21:34 BST (UK)  »
I'm just back from accompanying my Better Half on an annual bellringers outing in some Suffolk villages.  I got LOADS of photos of memorial inscriptions etc and views of the churches, interior and exterior.  St Andrew's Bramfield was the first stop and the very nice man who unlocked the church for us had some very interesting information about parish records.  I won't trumpet the news on here as he looked worried when I suggested it.  So if anyone has any interest in this parish, let me know by personal message and not on this thread and I'll tell you what treasure is to be found there!  In the meantime, I'll be sorting out and uploading some of the pictures I took.

regards,

The Lighter Side / (Not!) Descended from Russian Royalty!
« on: Tuesday 17 April 07 22:35 BST (UK)  »
I've just watched an episode of "Frasier" where the Crane brothers get the idea they're descended from the Romanov family and decide to research their family history.  They have a horrible family heirloom which is a bear with a clock in its stomach, which they find out is worth US$25,000.

They manage to contact an expert in Russian history who's connected to an important museum in Moscow, who visits them to see the clock.  He tells them the story of Princess Sonia, who fell in love with a commoner and enlisted the help of a scullery maid to smuggle out valuables to be sold so as to fund her new life with her lover, only to have the scullery maid abscond with all the valuables and the money.  The Crane brothers ask him "How did our great great grandmother get our clock back?" and he reveals "Your ancestor is not Princess Sonia - your ancestor is the scullery maid!"  And he takes the clock back (which they'd hoped to sell for lots of wonga!)

It was hilarious - and a perfect example of Doing Family History the Wrong Way Round.

The Lighter Side / 96 years ago
« on: Thursday 12 April 07 13:49 BST (UK)  »
I went with my partner on Easter Sunday to his church, and was introduced to a lady who is 96 years old.  Now I know that's not particularly unusual these days, but when I got home, I realised she was born before Titanic sank, that she was about four years old when WW1 broke out, and a young woman when Love Is The Sweetest Thing was a hit!  When she was my age, WW2 was only a recent memory and no-one had ever heard of the Beatles.

I don't think we often realise what a treasure the elderly are - they are walking repositories of memories and information and we need to grab them and get them talking before it's too late.  I think the University of Essex does an Oral History course - wouldn't it be great if this was more widespread and we could get recordings of people talking about their memories, that will otherwise soon be lost?

How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / Changing e-mail
« on: Friday 06 April 07 05:49 BST (UK)  »
I want to change my e-mail address on Rootschat, as the one registered is now old.  But I've forgotten my password AND the answer to the secret question.  Can anything be done?

The Common Room / half baptised??
« on: Wednesday 28 March 07 20:41 BST (UK)  »
I found this while searching parish registers.  I've never come across the expression "half baptised" or "whole baptised" before.  Does anyone know what it means?

The Common Room / Disappearing Westleys
« on: Wednesday 14 March 07 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
My 3 x great grandmother Azubah Westley appears on the 1871 England census (as Annibale Westley but if you look at the image you can see it's Azubah) and on the 1881 census.  Both times she says she's a widow, born in 1828 in Gloucestershire.

In 1881 her son George William Westley (my great great grandfather) aged 20, and her daughter Millicent aged 25 are living with her, along with William D Brookman, George A Cooper and Emily Vinson, all of whom I think are lodgers as she is a Lodging House Keeper.

In 1871 she had 20 year old Emily Westley living with her, as well as George and Millicent and LOTS of other people apparently in the same household, I'm not sure why.  (this is RG10 Piece 586, Folio 37 Page 17).

In 1861, 1851 and 1841 I can find no sign of her or the children.  I can't find the births of any of her children registered.  The census returns say they were all born in Finsbury, but I've searched all years between about 1849 to about 1852, then 1855 to 1858, then 1859 to 1862 for George.  It just looks as if Azubah didn't register the children's births.

I did find Millicent living with her 7 year old son in 1901, and claiming to be a widow, but I am pretty sure her son was illegitimate and she was still a spinster.  As I can't find any trace of a husband for Azubah, I wonder if her husband was also non-existent.

Azubah died in 1886, and in spite of her name being so unusual, I haven't been able to find a marriage of a Westley man to an Azubah.

Does anyone have any ideas where I should go from here please?   ???

United States of America / Help in Illinois please.
« on: Saturday 10 March 07 23:40 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone who lives in Illinois please let me know if there's any way I can check on the wellbeing of my cousin who lives there?  I keep writing and e-mailing her and she never replies.  It's not like her and I know she's been going through an incredibly rough time over the last year or so.  I could give more details by pm.
