Pembrokeshire / Higgon/Higgins
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 03:58 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering if someone can help me with an ancestor.

I have Charles Higgon christened 19 Sep 1813 at Walton East, Pembrokeshire, Wales. He married Martha Edwards 24 Nov 1838 at Castlemartin, Pembrokeshire.

Charles' father is Evan Higgon. He was a gamekeeper according to Charles' marriage certificate. And Charles was apparently born in Spittal (next to Walton East).

Charles was buried 4 Feb 1899 at Castlemartin, Pembrokeshire.

I'm having trouble finding Evan at all.

PS: The name changes from Higgon/Higgons/Higgins/Higgins/Higon etc. throughout the censuses and certificates.

Any help appreciated!

Okay, so the death certificate just says he was 71 years old (so born Abt. 1835), had lived in Queensland for about 30 years and was born At Sea.

There are no parents listed.

Thanks!

I'll wait to see what this death certificate says and then contact the Tenterfield Historical Society.

He was married in Tenterfield in 1877 to a Mary Ann Eliza Cox.

Oh thank you. I'll keep it mind that record, depending on what the death certificate says.

Thank you for the information re: marine births.

I was aware of that record of a baptism however it appears William's middle name started with a 'J'. It's still possible it is him though.

I am wondering why he didn't list his parents names on his marriage certificate.

The death certificate isn't in my possession, but another ancestor of his does have it. However they weren't very forthcoming with information so I am purchasing it myself. As far as I am aware from them it said he was 71 years old at death and was born at sea. However, there could be more clues!

I did a bit of searching for his obituary but no luck as yet. He died 10 Oct 1906 in Allora, Queensland. I looked in the Allora newspaper and the Warwick newspaper.

I found William and his wife in the Electoral roll, but only right before he died. It doesn't list parental or birth information.

When I have the death certificate I will let you in on what it says. I doubt parents will be listed though, as the index just says 'born at sea aged 71 years' as well (from previous experience anything written there that isn't a name means there are no names on the certificate...but we shall see).

My ancestor William Thomas has said he was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. From his age given on his son's birth certificate he would have been born About 1837.

On his death certificate it says he was born at sea.

So, presumably, his family came from the USA to Australia in About 1837, and on the way William was born (if what his death certificate says is true. His wife was the informant).

However I'm having trouble finding Shipping records for 1837 to Australia. I believe he would have arrived at NSW as he married there in 1877.

Does anyone know much about USA to Australia immigration in this early period. Also about marine births.

There's the death of a Theresa BARTLETT (no middle name) in 1902 - but parents are indexed as "unknown"  :'(

Presumably the informant did not know their names.  And might well not have been able to furnish any other information ...

What a pest!

JAP

I just looked it up myself, and thought the same thing! I presume because her parents were overseas they weren't known to the informant...

So do you think the death certificate or the marriage certificate is the way to go?

Yes I did find an indexed death record. I am pretty sure it did list her parents names. Unfortunately I can't find the place in my notebook where I noted down the death record. This is what a 6 month break does to you. lol. I am determined to keep better records of sources now, after my break.

There could be other children, I'll have to look into that.

Good idea, I will buy the death certificate instead.

I got confused with the record of the marriage sorry, yes she did use her married name.

The child that is missing, who is my ancestor, Theresa Lillian Bartlett was born in About 1962 (this date arrived at by subtracting her age given on her marriage certificate off the date of the marriage). The marriage certificate (between her and Jonathan Bennett) indicates her parents as Theresa Alice Askin and William E Bartlett. I cannot find her birth record in Victoria, but it says on her marriage certificate that she was born here. I was then looking at other children born to a Theresa Askin and William E Bartlett, but only finding children born to a Theresa Alice Heskins and one to a Theresa Alice Calder (with Williamd Edward Bartlett as a father). I thought that perhaps I am misreading the certificate and it says Heskins OR Theresa Jnr didn't know her mother's maiden name (or couldn't spell it etc.), I also considered the possibility that it wasn't her who wrote out the certificate (from the writing it seems it was the minister/priest who wrote it all out...seeing as all three marriage records I have (on the same page) are in the same hand and all performed by the same minister). I'm not sure on the standard in Victoria, is it the people who are being wed, or the minister who fills it out?
I couldn't find Theresa seniors birth record but I DID find her death. I then thought she may have came over here from overseas. I then turned to the immigration records and found a Theresa Calder, which rang a bell, with that name being used for one of the children AND the marriage record I could find between a Theresa and a William Bartlett.
I then went to the census and found a Theresa Heskins married to a John Calder. So naturally, I kept digging...and found more and more evidence to suggest that Theresa Heskins IS Theresa Calder/Askin.

Thoughts?

I think the most important document I need right now is their marriage certificate, which I will acquire asap.
