Suffolk / Re: Manning Bloss BORLEY - Father - Robert LIMOU - fact or fiction?
« on: Thursday 18 October 07 19:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi John,

The leap year is finger trouble it should be 3 Feb. For the whole family I have

Mary Ann 22 March 1814 (twin of Hanna) - no idea why there is a gap, perhaps Hanna was ill at birth...
Hanna Elizabeth 29 Mar 1814
George 14 Aug 1816
James 21 Dec 1818
Althea bn 3 Feb 1820
Elizabeth 15 Oct 1821
Joseph 29 June 1823
Emma 20 Nov 1824
Harriet 18 Mar 1826
William Decimus 15 Nov 1828
Jane 16 Nov 1829
Samuel 3 Jan 1834

As you can see there is a large gap till the last child.
All children were christened in Barham Suffolk to George and Amy Borley nee Garnham

It may be that the 1799 Joseph was an uncle (?) but I cannot confirm..  Though it's more likely to be a mistake of some kind on the IGI. I confess that I always take it's info with a pinch of salt. Yes it is sometimes a good resource when you are stuck, and has pointed me towards possibilities on more than one occasion, but sometimes it is just plain wrong.

At present I do not know where either parent originated from, could you help here?

Hi Mo,

Many thanks for having a look. I guess that it is possible that this marriage simply has not been indexed yet. Could also be possible that they didn't get registered, but I thought it was compulsory by 1856  :-\ Looks like I am well and truly stuck until the GRO gets it act together and produces it's own indexes which are supposed to enable full searching for both bride and groom. Apparently it's due in 2000 and something or other. This century anyway, well maybe..

Hello John,

I guess that we are very distantly related then. you might like to know a bit more about Althea, though perhaps you have this already?

She was born on 30 Feb 1820 in Barham, Suffolk to George and Amy (nee Garnham) Borley, one of 12 children. I have no idea why there was such a gap between her birth and christening. Sadly none are Manning or Bloss, though the 10th was christened Decimus.  As far as I can tell Althea never married but was living with her younger sister Jane (bn 16 Nov 1829) at 118 Spring Road, St Helen Ipswich in 1891. She was still alive 10 years later, though on her own in Alms houses, finally passing away in 1905 aged 85, a very respectable age for the times.

As far as I can find out Althea is not a common name at all, (Anthea but not Althea) which  suggests that there may be a family somewhere in the past who had a set of slightly unusual names and perhaps this is the origin of the Bloss or Manning.

Equally it could be that it is a Maiden name.

It does look like Robert Symonds was the father and I wonder if there is a bastardy case somewhere in the records. I one of  these in another branch of my family, - a Rebecca Hite, illegitimate child of Ann Stringer and Thomas Wastaff (Ann Married a Hite who was transported at the time of Rebecca's birth). Such a record might just confirm the fathers name.

One of the (many) things that has puzzled me about Manning is why he was adopted by the Watkins family. Generally orphans etc were adopted by family members and at present I cannot find any link between the Borleys and Watkins. Have you any ideas?

I haven't been able to get back any further yet as, being based in London and working all week it's very difficult for me to get to Suffolk.

Hi Toni*

Many thanks for this. Of the dates you've found it looks like the only one suitable is Mary A Jeffkins in 1866, unless she got married many years after the children were born (unlikely?? - I'm not at all sure. Ancestors seem to have done lots of odd things so I am now very open minded)

Guess the only way to find out is to check the cert and hope!

Many thanks once again.

Hi All,

Well the plot thickens.

To recap to save people reading through this thread. I am trying to locate Mary Ann Sheppard (or similar) She was living in Pinner Drive, Pinner Middx at the time of her marriage. Unfortunately her birth is a mystery.

There are two possible families which Mo has  located for me. The most likely is living at 11 Pinner drive in 1881 (Mary Ann married in 1883). They have a daughter Ann, but no mary ann and the daughter is a bit young. The thought is therefore that my mary ann was in service in 1881 and then moved back to the family home prior to her marriage. Now read on.

I have been unable to locate birth certificates for either Any or Ann from 11 Pinner drive. I do however have the birth certificates fro the two sons, Henry and George.

Henry born 10 June 1876 to Thomas Shepperd and Mary S formally Jefrins
George born ??? (it could be twelfth) Feb 1879 to Thomas Sheppard and Mary S formally Jefkins.

Sadly free bmd is drawing a complete blank on this! There are umpeen Thomas Sheppard/Shepherd's marrying Marys but none marrying a Jefkin(s)/Jefrin(s) or Jef anything!  :-\

The IGI has also drawn blank.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Many thanks David, I'd never have worked that out!

Sadly the IGI has no record of either Amy or Ann Sheppard in Upton Cum Chalvey with parents Thomas and Mary.  Looks like I'll just have to hope for the certificates.

Hi,

Slough is now in Berkshire BUT it was one of those areas that "shifted" and was formerly in Buckinghamshire.

Regards,
Mo

Hi Mo,

Do you have any info as to when they moved it? I can't find Slough in Berks or Bucks on Hugh Wallis' IGI batch numbers site.

I spent some time at the family record centre and London archive yesterday. Couldn't find Martha (11 Pinner Drive family) in the Stanmore baptisms, but I did find out that Henry and George are in the civil register. I'm just hoping that the certificates I've ordered will give me a handle on Mary's maiden name and I can then maybe work forward from the marriage and see if they had a Mary Ann, or if Ann is actually Mary Ann.

Hi Mo,

Many many thanks for all your efforts on this. I took some time out in Harrow's local history centre, since I was in the area. They had some census returns and I found the 11 Pinner Drive Shephards in 1881 and the 24 Nelson Road lot. Like you I could not track the 11 Pinner drive lot back in 1871. I would have expected them to be in Stanmore as Martha (Ann's younger sister) was born there around 1871/2 I can only assume that they were renting having moved from Slough at some point after the 1871 Census before settling in Pinner Drive.

There were a few other single shepheards, and a Thomas, unmarried, living with is elderly mother.

Thinking about things a bit more it does seem odd that the Nelson Road lot would have a daughter Mary A in 1861, who is presumably the same one who visits the Davis' in 1871 and then who moves in with a completely different set of Shepheards in 1883 before she gets married.

It's also a bit confusing that she does not know where she was born (or perhaps her husband does not?) in 1891 when it's documented in the previous census. Hmm the more I look at this the more I wonder if it is a child of the Pinner Drive family, who for whatever reason is not with them in 1881 but returns to the family home just before she gets married. If so then in 1871 they could be in Slough (can't check this on the IGI as Slough isn't listed for some reason) potentially as follows...

Thos. Sheppard, Head, Mar, 39, Farm Labourer, Berwick
Mary, Wife, 24, Berwick
Mary Ann, Daur 7/8, Scholar, Berks Slough
Amy, Daur,  6, Scholar, Berks Slough
Ann, Daur, 3, Scholar, Berks Slough

The fly in this is the 1901 census which definitely says Bucks as a birth place.

Any thoughts?

Hi Mo,

Yes I goofed on the age of the Harrow Ann. My edit and your post must have crossed. Sadly I don't have full access to Ancestry so can't have a look at the  the Mary A as the visitor till I get somewhere that does.

I confess that I am a tad confused at present, could you confirm that I have this correct?

In 1861 Thomas and Mary Shepheard, have a daughter, Mary A age 1 and live at 24 Nelson Road
In 1871 a Mary A Shepheard is visiting James Davis aged 11 and the Nelson Road family have a new son
In 1881 the Nelson Road family have a daughter Ann Age 7.

In 1881 The Pinner Drive family have a daughter Ann age 13.

I wonder if the 1881 entry for Ann in Nelson road is a mistake and it should be 17?
