Hi Mare   :)

Mmmm ... interesting.

I would think it more likely that Eliza's surname has been misspelt on the death index.

But I came across this (which solves the "Susan" mystery).  ;)

Symonds Street Cemetery, Auckland :

"Anglican St. Paul's Register has Susan OWEN
buried 25 January 1873, aged 6 months, of Kyber Pass Road".

Hi Mare   :)

Was there a son born 1870 "Samuel Henry DWEN"  ?
[With a marriage in 1901 to "CALDER" ?]

If so  ... then his marriage shows on the CD as "Damuel Henry DWEN".   :D

Hi Tiffaney   :)

Haven't we had this enquiry before  ???

Pretty sure that there is only a partial list of passengers for the "Indian Queen" voyage  ... and your NAIRN family weren't mentioned.

Try this site as their are a lot of Grants miners licences on here that fit in your timeframe;

Hmmm  ... but wasn't the John GRANT - miner - 1876 - travelling on the "Otago",  a case of mistaken identity.   ???

Yes it is beginning to look as though James and Tabitha had only one son John Victor and that he either had no children or no sons.

I am assuming that the Rona Kathleen whose death is also recorded was John Victor's wife, she doesn't appear to be James' daughter as I can find no record of a birth for her.

Our NZ (online) BDM only shows births up until 1909.  It appears the "Rona Kathleen" mentioned was born c. 1912  ... so she possibly could be either a daughter of James  .. or the wife of John Victor ??    (Another source checked though, does not show a New Zealand marriage for John Victor up till 1956 - he may have married after that date ... or in another country ?)

At the cemetery link (provided by "althea") for death of Rona BROADHOUSE, you can find the funeral director's contact details (possibly there's also a web link for them or an email contact if you try a "google" search).     The F/D may be able to give you info on next-of-kin ... and it seems there is also a book of remembrance  for Rona).

Hi Carolyn

Was just having another think about James' (time of) arrival in NZ.   ???

The following site tells you a little about "mission schooners / ships".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Cross_(ship)

["Southern Cross" was the name given to a succession of ships serving the Melanesian Mission of the Anglican Church.]

"Southern Cross" Number 5 appears to have been the vessel James' served on (William SINKER, RNR, Captain)  ... and it seems this vessel was launched in 1903.

I couldn't find any more details about the ship, BUT ... I wondered if James might have travelled here (from UK) on it's maiden voyage.   ???

Descendants of James BROADHOUSE  ??

Mmm ... The NZ Marriage Index has only the one listing for this surname (being James' 1904 marriage).

(And there is a total of only 4 BROADHOUSE deaths in NZ up to todays' date).

The funeral notices for James and (beautifully-named) Tabitha Adelaide, may offer some clues (perhaps too,  the notice for son John Victor) ?     The National Library of New Zealand may be able to assist with copies of the notices ?   (See the PapersPast website for email address).
