Thanks for all your help

Do you know where I would go to obtain his death certificate??

Death record available via this link >
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/search?path=%2FqueryEntry.m%3Ftype%3Ddeaths

Note:   We always recommend that you purchase the "printout" version of the death record (rather than a certificate).    The  "printout" includes the maximum amount of information available.   ;)

The Police Gazette records > there were several offences recorded > for James Henry COSSGROVE (surname also shown as COSGROVE) gave his birth year as about 1888 and also about 1891/92.
That type of variation in birth years, often occurred - as of course did miss-spellings of names.  ;D
---

You may already have his birth listing from the NZBDM site ?
If not, is shows as

1891 - COSSGROVE - James Henry   (actual birthdate was  13 August 1891 )
son of  Kate* and William
  [
*Some other COSSGRVE births - siblings ??  Mother shown as Katie - Father as William Henry  ?? ]

And this snippet I came across also (because he doesn't appear to have served in NZ Army WW1 ?) :
NZ Army - WW1  Reserve Roll - 2nd Division  :

COSSGROVE - James Henry -- Fisherman - Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island

Record for former wife >

Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland -- Cremations

COSSGROVE - Kate Lancett*  - Age:  68 years
Died:  2 July 1953  /  Cremated 3 July / Ashes Scattered :  4 July 1953
Late of 19 Humariri Street, Point Chevalier, AK    Occupation:  Housewife
-----

*  LANCETT was her Maiden surname :
Seems that Kate COSSGROVE was living at Auckland from about 1941.    James Henry appears to have still been in South Island at that date.

Hi Kirsty

Yes it is exciting when you finally find someone who's been "hiding" from you.   ;)

If you read through the article I gave the link for (1 September 1931) you'll see that Kate has made application to the Court for sole custody of the children and maintence payments for them.  No, Kate is not in trouble.  ;)

And I just found this >  Application for Dissolution of Marriage  (Divorce) -- 1947-1948

https://collections.archives.govt.nz/en/web/arena/search#/?q=James+henry+cossgrove

[  Looks like this Divorce application went through the Auckland Supreme Court ... which may suggest that James Henry was living there around that time ??  ]

I'll check some other records for you too.

Thanks all

Would you happen to know why it says Mr Reid in brackets?

Yes.    (Mr Gordon J. REED ) ... it's the name of the solicitor who represented James COSSGROVE.

[   (Mr S. RITCHIE) was the lawyer representing the wife, Kate COSSGROVE.   ]

Hi again

*   Can you tell us where you got the  >  5 August 1931 " date from ?

The NZ Police Gazette has him listed as being amongst prisoners released from gaols (all of NZ) during the week ending  6 June 1931 :

He also appeared in court (at Southland -- matrimonial/maintenance matter) - reported in newspaper on 1 September 1931 :
