Midlothian / Re: Edinburgh addresses (Castlehill and Lawnmarket)
« on: Saturday 18 November 23 17:26 GMT (UK)  »
In the early directories (up to 1844) CastleHill and Lawnmarket are listed as part of High Street which may account for the numbering.

As to re numbering in the mid to late 19th century many Scottish towns moved their numbering systems to conform to the requirements of the post office.

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Re: Mothers Maiden name

I agree with Gadget & Wiggy but like yourself I cannot find a marriage record on SP. The only record of a Margaret McCutcheon (using margaret MCCutch*) marrying someone named Smith was in 1900 (James Smith in Old Cumnock).

Could it have been an irregular marriage ?

Technical Help / Re: Laptop or iPad
« on: Sunday 29 October 23 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
As Martin says it very much depends on what you want or intend to do on the machine. As you mention "writing up" the information you may find the onscreen keyboard of the iPad awkward to use. A separate keyboard can be added but it all adds to the overall cost.

1) ANNIE MCMANUS ALCROFT married Samuel MCNICOL 1937 606/ 34 Registered in Monkton & Prestwick
2) ANNIE MCMANUS ALCROFT married FREDERICK JAMES HOLLANDS in 1945  606/ 113 Registered in Monton & Prestwick
3) ANNIE MCMANUS ALCROFT married WILLIAM MACK HERCUS in 1947 606/ 7 Registered in Monkton & Prestwick

I know this is an old post but I've finally gotten answers to some questions regarding these Alcroft women
No 1 & No 3 are the same person Annie McManus Alcroft born 1915 the daughter of Alexander Alcroft and Annie Mcmanus (Samuel McNicol obtained a divorce in 1945)
No 2 is the niece of No.1 and was born in 1922.She is the  daughter of Rebecca Alcroft  - no father is listed on the birth registration - Annie no.2's  sister is Alice Mcmanus Alcroft (again no father listed on her birth registration.)

My thanks to Hullnow for providing the Birkenhead link as Alexander Alcroft was proving elusive - he claimed in 3 different cesnus records to have nee born in Scotland but gave a different location each time - but there was a suitable candidate born Q3 in Birkenhead

Ireland / Re: Strange surname
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 16:40 BST (UK)  »
What makes you think she was born in Ireland ?

A quick search on that surname (MyHeritage.com) only throws up two examples and they are both from St Kitts

Canada / Re: When did Canada adopt compulsary birth certificates

A quick search gives the answer - "it depends"  ::)

Apparently in some areas the registration began in the 1860's while it did not come completely into force over the majority of the country until the 1920's

Scotland / Re: what does this mean
« on: Sunday 01 October 23 15:03 BST (UK)  »
Its 1794 in the C of S OPR's - Mary Flettcher and Willeam Boys in the parish of Tundergarth.

My first thought was a Frame Reference number but that doesn't match up with No Image possibly best to drop off an email to Scotlands people and ask for clarification.

Child of the 50's -  ::) sorry no excuse  ;D ;D

Personally I doubt that I use anything more than a fraction of the power of the program. I work mainly from the Records View and have added and adjusted the columns so that I have the individuals, their spouse(s) dates of Birth Marriage and death all showing. As I said before one of the strengths of the program is its flexibility (although some see this as a detriment) and you can make it as simple or as complicated as you want. As long as it suits you who cares what anyone else thinks

Added: there are a number of excellent "How To" video tutorials on You tube which are well worth watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBCaOVLX_hE
