I see that you are researching Longhursts- one of the Tickner girls m a Frederick Longhurst 1880ish.  The mother died, & C1891 gives her daughter, Maud, living with her Tickner grandparents.

Ok, I've just got back from the library, I use their edition of Ancestry.

Frederick Longhurst married Emma Tickner Sept 1/4 1883 Dorking 2a 207

If this is the right entry

Emma Longhurst 23 died Mar 1/4 1886 Dorking 2a 116

Obviously these events happen between the 1881 and 1891 censuses  :(

I tried to find a birth entry for 'Maud' around 1885 which would tie up with the 1891 census but couldn't, which leaves me to suggest that she wasn't registered as 'Maud', so she could be anything.

As to where she is on the 1901, she doesn't turn up as Maud Longhurst so choices are

she's died, Maud's not her 'real' name, highly unlikely she's married as she would only just be 16, or she's emigrated.

If Maud isn't her 'real' name she could be impossible to find.

Going back to Frederick, I can't place him on my trees so far, but without knowing his fathers name from the marriage cert it is quite difficult to track him down on the census too.

Sorry I've not been to helpful on this.

Anyway, my husband and daughter have just gone to the park so I'll get the microfiche out and have a look for wills etc and get back to you later.

I think that branch of the Longhursts were based in Sutton.

I'll have a look, don't think so from memory, but I've got so many Longhursts I'm trying to attach to my trees it's possible I've got notes somewhere. Most of my Longhurst stuff now though is not so much the modern stuff but way way back. I'm working on a lead that if it comes off in the fullness of time will get me back to the 1500's.

Hi Maggott

Have a good look around the publications on the West Surrey FHS site that Frances posted.

Not only are there pr's but also wills. They might be useful. My only reservation with the wills is that there is no on-line index listing so you might be going in blind. I'll have a look at what I 've got to see if there may be something of interest to you.

What you may find with the pr's is that when you cross reference them with the IGI, there are more entries on the fiche. I learned about this through my own research. You may find more people than you were looking for and you'll soon get a feel for the other families in the parish that married into yours. Sometimes you'll find copies of notes the vicar or clerk has entered, they make interesting reading too.

The West Surrey FHS turns around orders really quickly so as long as you've got access to a microfiche reader you'll be on your way again soon. I don't know where in the world you are from your profile but larger or central libraries tend to have them.

Hope this helps.

Hi Maggott

I've just had a look at the Shere transcriptions and the marriage is entered without a date between 1st Aug and 4th October 1825

Thomas Tickner X otp b(atchelor)
Amelia Tickner X otp sp(inster)

By Banns

witnesses Barbara Stillwell X James Stillwell X

In 1826 there is a baptism

26 July John natural son of Amelia seamstress but not a son for Thomas and Amelia. There is an Amelia daughter but she is buried 2 years later in 1828 so wouldn't make it to the 1841 census.

Before that there are 2 baptisms in 1792 for a Milly, daughter of Job and Jane and then John & Elizabeth and then in 1810 for Amelia d of William & Elizabeth and at this point....

I got confused. This is the problem when looking for things in the PR's. You get confused and then something stands out, doesn't add up and suggests possibly the parish clerk or priest may have got something wrong.

I would suggest getting a copy of the Shere PR's on microfiche from the West Surrey FHS for £2.20 and then going through them step by step.

I've found through looking for my own family, that things can be wrong and it's only when you start going backwards and forwards and looking at other names in the parish at the same time you realise where things are in context. Realising that a child has been attributed to the wrong parents and only realising when cross referencing with later censuses.

As you said, the transcriptions are stuffed with Tickners (and variations). It could be £2.20 very well spent.

I could offer to transcribe for you but things would not be in context to the other families around them at the time. By the way, there are baptisms for children of James and Barbara Stillwell around the same time, so they could be related in some way. But really you need to have a look at it all, date by date.

Does this make sense?  ???

Hi Robyn

Happy to have helped in some small way.

Out of interest (and being nosey) I've just had a look again at the IGI and, knowing the banns were called in 1807, had a look for their marriage, hoping it would be in Middlesex but

have a look again!!

John Clark and Sarah Rutter were married in Greenwich 8 June 1807

Now is this a coincidence or what?? and it's an extracted marriage not a submission.

Maybe someone on the Kent or London board can follow this up for you.

Happy hunting.

PS My brother's a Robin in New Zealand too  ;D

Thanks Christine

I'll wait for the online indeces and see what they turn up.

Tried a few cemeteries without luck.

Everything is so vague which doesn't help.

Went to Hounslow today and double checked the IGI entries.

They are correct and I can add that John, the father, is a Servant as far as occupation goes.

And to add again

Sarah born 7th Feb 1811 baptised 3 March 1811, but surname is Clark, no e

As to the marriage of John and Sarah, this is a bit weird.

The Banns for John Clark and Sarah Rutter were published on 1, 8 and 15 March 1807 according to the Banns Book for All Saints Isleworth but there is no corresponding marriage in the marriage register even though it would seem they were both of the parish.

I asked the archivist where they could have married and it could be New Brentford (but there is no marriage register at Hounslow only a banns book and it's not there) or unlikely, Twickenham, but ran out of time to have a look.

Anyway, they should have married around March 1807 and you have a maiden name for Sarah.

By the way neither of them were baptised at Isleworth.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tim

Taken from Microfilm of the parish registers of St Lawrence, New Brentford

Mary Cooper June 23 1830
Alfred Cooper June 10 1832
Thomas Cooper November 2 1834
James Cooper January 15 1837
Prudence Cooper August 18 1839
Jesse George Cooper December 18 1842
Sophia Cooper November 10 1844

Went up to 1851 and Eliza wasn't listed.

No other children listed in between.

So, as to the marriage.

I took a copy of their marriage entry which I can send you by separate email if you want. If you do, please send me a personal message with your email address in it. Don't post it here because of spam.

Briefly though,
William Cooper of Kessing in the County of Suffolk Bachelor married Ann Maria Cooper of New Brentford Middlesex Spinster by Licence on 22nd September 1830 at St Lawrence New Brentford.

I'll let you do the maths and then think about the possible scenarios   :D

Hi Ewan

I understand but can I add....

I've been working my way through the Steventon Parish Registers for my Mothers tree and it's amazing how many errors there are. It's only because I've been going backwards and forwards that I can see how and where the mistakes have been made.

So don't give up thinking it's not the right family. But to be really sure, you'd need to work through the registers yourself and that's your problem ;) being where you are.
