The Common Room / Anyone know of FTM offers
« on: Friday 19 January 24 16:19 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to help a friend. Can anyone help with a special offer for FTM download version? I did find it online for almost £90 which is far more than I paid a few years ago.

I'm hoping someone can help me.  My FTM programme has disappeared from my windows 10 laptop.  I've carried out intensive searches but it is not to be seen.  I looked in 'add and delete programmes'  Searched for a file, but found nothing related to FTM.  I'm feeling very frustrated as all my notes, etc are on their.  I do have a tree on Ancestry but it's not as comprehensive as my FTM tree.

Can anyone offer suggestions of help, I find it worrying as if FTM can just disappear what else may I lose, and how does it happen?

Technical Help / Losing interent connectivity when a 2nd laptop is inuse
« on: Wednesday 31 January 18 05:17 GMT (UK)  »
There's three laptop users in my house and one laptop has a problem.

To explain I'll label them A, B, and C.

If A and B are both in use A loses internet connectivity

If A and C are both in use, both work fine.

If B and C are both in use, both work fine

Therefore it seems A has a problem connecting to wi-fi when B is connected.

Is there anyone who could offer a fix for this, please?

A's operating system is windows 8; B and C windows 10.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Why was he named Holland?
« on: Tuesday 22 September 09 01:22 BST (UK)  »
My 4xgrandfather Thomas James Hargreaves born Bailiff Bridge c. 1784, married Mary Armistead born circa 1786 Priestley Green, at St John's Halifax (29/11/1802).

Thomas and Mary had five known children

Rachel baptised 1805 born Southowram
William baptised 1807 born Illingworth
George baptised 1809 born Illingworth
Simon baptised 1811 born Illingworth
Holland (my 3xgrandfather) baptised 1814 Halifax.

I have traced Mary Armistead's ancestry (not found any Holland's)

I am at a standstill with Thomas James as I've been unable to positively identify his parents, and as Holland is an unusual choice for a first name, I thought maybe it was the surname of a grandmother, but I've not found a Hargreaves/Holland marriage.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why Holland would be chosen as a first name, as it does seem a strange choice considering his siblings had regular names.

Thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / John Turner's Parents?
« on: Friday 21 August 09 01:41 BST (UK)  »
I have a marriage certificate for a John Turner(occ. Stoker) and Mary Bamforth both aged 21 as I know Mary was infact 24, both ages could be wrong . The marriage took place 31 Jul 1851 in Huddersfield, the witnesses were Luke Turner Brook and J. Battye.  John’s father is named as James Turner deceased, and no occupation given.

I have all the info I require on Mary, but I’m stuck with John.  I have John and Mary on census returns
1861 Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 3261; Folio: 101; Page: 25;
1871 Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 4365; Folio: 27; Page: 48;
1881 Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 4381; Folio: 105; Page: 17;
1891 Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 3566; Folio 87; Page 14;

Living next door to John and Mary in 1861 are: Martha Turner aged 53, Isabella Turner aged 15 and Thomas Turner aged 11.  It could be coincidence that two families named Turner are living next door to each other (Turner being a common name), but maybe there’s a relationship.  I’ve also found Luke Turner Brook on the 1861 census ref:
Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 3255; Folio: 90; Page: 27;

I cannot positively identify John on the 1841, or 51 census.  And though I feel there must be a connection between John and Luke Turner Brook, I have thus far been unable to establish what it is.

My head is spinning with all the Turner permutations and I'm hoping someone will cast fresh eyes on the search.  Any little extra snippet may help, as I feel sure there must be something I've overlooked.

Many thanks for reading this, and thanks in anticipation for anything anyone is able to input.

Added info
In 1851 there's this family who I initially thought was my John (he's a stoker - same as John's occ. on marriage) Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2295; Folio: 684; Page: 49;
However, that family in 1841 have an Ann Chadwick aged 25 living in the household: Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 1277; Book: 6; Civil Parish: Kirk Burton; County: Yorkshire; Enumeration District: 2; Folio: 38; Page: 27;

I have found births for a Sarah Chadwick and Ann Chadwick (sisters) also a marriage between Sarah Chadwick and RICHARD Turner in 1827 at Silkstone.  Could Richard be my James, or am I clutching at straws?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Help with National Archives document, please
« on: Wednesday 19 August 09 19:03 BST (UK)  »
Please would someone with knowledge of the National Archives website take a look at this, and tell me what the document is?  An ancestor of mine is mentioned, but I don't understand what the document refers to, or whether it would be worth requesting.  Many thanks.
