Goodness, you haven't looked very far for the origin of the name! The Vans Agnew family was one of the principal families of Wigtownshire with properties at Sheuchan and Barnbarroch and may people worked on the estates or were in some other way connected to them by social ties. Some children christened '- Vans Agnew' may have been illegitimate offspring of the family I suppose, or were simply called that in homage to the family.
Anyway, that's where the name come from - Vans Agnew, with an s on the Vans, by the way.

I have seen the Van Agnew name used in other families as middle names around this area.

By the way, I see there are a number of references to the name Varns (and similar) in Sussex. In Scotland, the reason that Vaus turned into Vans is that, with a long Scottish 'a' the two sound very similar. To this day in Wigtownshire where my Vans family comes from, the locals pronounce Vans as 'Varnce'.

Hello All,
I research all Vance, Vans, Vaus (and variants of the name) families - see http://genealogy.jvans.co.uk/intro.html where I have data on 23,500+ individuals. Now I've started on these Sussex Vaus references - does anyone have a fairly complete version they would give me to save me duplicating all your research (if I even can, you've all obviously got some depth to yours!)? I'd be most grateful.

You are, of course, entitled to that opinion. Many of us, in the Vans/Vance families, have found the results extremely interesting.
