World War One / WW1 8th Bn., Welsh Regt in Nov 1918
« on: Friday 13 January 23 21:07 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching a local memorial and am interested in Capt. Gordon Williams, 8th Bn., Welsh Regt. who died 15 Nov 1918.

He is buried in Lubumbashi Cemetery, Democratic Republic of Congo but when looking for details of the battalion it seems they were in either Sudan or Iraq (nothing about Congo).  Can anyone throw some light on this?

World War One / WW1 soldier - can't find MIC or Pension
« on: Wednesday 30 November 22 20:06 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any further information on:

Private DM2/171317 Albert Jules Postell, Royal Army Service Corps

All I can find on Ancestry is his Medal Award Roll.  Can't find his MIC or anything in the Pension section.  Have also checked CWGC.  Presumably he died after discharge.

All I know is that he was born in 1877 in Southwark and probably orphaned and he's listed in Jersey on the 1891 census at an Industrial School.

Hoping someone might do a look-up for me.

I'm researching WW1 soldiers and have come across Albert Jules Postell born 1877 in Southwark, London/Surrey.  Albert is listed on the 1891 census as an 'inmate' at the Industrial School.  I'm assuming that his parents died and he was sent to Jersey.  I've not come across a London child being sent to the Channel Islands before.  Was this common?  Is anyone able to check the online records for the School please?

World War Two / Help understanding RAF record
« on: Monday 17 October 22 20:22 BST (UK)  »

I'm researching a war memorial and at present I'm looking at Flying Officer 79723 A.R. Yates 959 Balloon Sqdn., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who accidentally drowned 26 Jan. 1941 at Empire Wharf, Falmouth, whilst serving onboard HMS PC74.

As PC74 is a patrol boat what would he have been doing aboard?.

Also, I don't understand what I've found on the RAF commands website - link below.  Could someone please explain the significance of Magister T9818 (is this a plane)? Also there are a couple of other men mentioned but with a slightly different date in January.

World War One / Drake Battalion July 1915
« on: Friday 10 December 21 19:40 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching a local war memorial (St Matthias, Stoke Newington).  One of the men named is Stoker 1st Class 225124. (R.F.R.PO.B.4263) F.L. Hadrill, Drake Battalion, Royal Navy.

Could someone explain to me in simple terms what he would have been doing in July 1915 when he died?  I am already aware that he was in Gallipoli but want to understand how a stoker would die when he's not on a ship (at least no ship mentioned on CWG site).  I hope this make sense and isn't a silly question.  Thank you.

World War One / Identification of Hospital Ship
« on: Monday 29 November 21 20:47 GMT (UK)  »
The attached record relates to AB 4/2451 Augustus Donne, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.  He was serving aboard HMS Ossory when he died accidentally on 28 Mar 1916.  Can anyone decipher the name of the hospital ship?  Would also be interested to know where the Ossory was at this time?

World War One / Royal Naval record
« on: Sunday 21 November 21 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping someone can explain this record to me.  It relates to Edward Barton who died at Jutland aboard HMS Fortune.  In the top left it looks like he 'enlisted' 31.1.1899, however when you look at the ships served on column the first one is 7.8.1897.

World War One / war diary for 3rd County of London Yeomanry / Imperial Camel Corps
« on: Sunday 29 August 21 16:07 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on Lt. S.G. Combe, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) attd. Imperial Camel Corps who died 11.10.1918.  Soldiers's Died described him as "Died" as opposed to KIA or DoW.  How can I find out more?  I can't work out which Division he belonged to, so can't locate a diary.  All help greatly appreciated.

I have lots of other info. on him as I'm currently researching the Wanstead Orphan Asylum war memorial on which he appears.  Many thanks.
