Wales / Re: Southwest Wales

Hi Mona,
S-W Wales is a rather vague term, probably most useful for weather-forecasts; I would agree with Lee that Carmarthenshire should be included, and most people with local knowledge I think would include Cardiganshire (now Ceredigion), which from 1974 to 1996 with Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire formed the county of Dyfed, for which see Wikipedia.

I think the Vaults were formerly known as the Menai Vaults (don't know since when).

Nant Coch was at the top end of Glasllwch Lane

Just wondering how long it will be before these old names exist only on the old maps and Rootschat pages.

The Common Room / Re: Old medical term "waste" ?
« on: Friday 27 February 09 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
"A wasting of the body by disease" is the appropriate definition I think from the Shorter Oxford Dictionary; it also says that the use is rare, now dialect.

Remembered too that "wasting away" was an (?)unscientific way of describing a person's deterioration. The wasting disease, phthisis from the Greek, used to be a way of describing what is called Tuberculosis in modern times. Perhaps it was a standard medical term for cause of death at the time.

Monmouthshire / Re: Draethen

Having looked at the 1871 census on Ancestry I see that "Rhydgwern" (district 13) is listed as the civil parish for the district, to include Draethen. I couldn't find either on a brief visit to the 1861 and haven't searched after 1871.

Wales / Re: Welsh Names
« on: Friday 20 February 09 23:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chainsaw,
As Gadget and Arranroots point out, conventions in spelling are pretty recent (just go back to the old chestnut of W. Shakespeare spelling his own name in umpteen different ways); however, real modern historians tend to agree to stick to consistent spellings, and I am tempted to think that the names you quote are borrowed from much earlier writers who didn't stick to the conventions.
There are obvious mistakes of transcription, e.g. Lor... for Iorwerth, Lago for Iago, an un-Welsh Llewellyn for Llywelyn, likewise Meryic for the (normal) Anglicised Meyrick and Welsh Meurig. One site from my favourites which contains loads of these old Welsh names in fairly dependable spellings is:
http://fabpedigree.com/  Look for the Principality of Wales in the menu then go to the surnames for hours of fun. You may even find some ancestors there!
          Happy searching, Pinot  :)

Monmouthshire / Re: Draethen

I meant Rhyd y Gwern parish, which I saw mentioned; perhaps it is not so, and I misinterpreted the Google reference. Quite happy to be corrected.  :)
And to bow to what I now see is sure to be Rowley's superior local knowledge!

Looks to me as if it's Rhydygwern, going on various Google entries; any good?
