Lancashire / Manchester baptism
« on: Monday 29 November 10 23:26 GMT (UK)  »
I recently came across the baptism of a Jane Cormack, through MLFHS Catholic Register Index Search.
It gave the date of 1854, NewBridge Workhouse Page 26 at Manchester St Chad.
Jane Cormack ,my gggrandmother died in the Newbridge workhouse in 1857 and I am hoping that there is some connection, but without the precise date of the baptism I don't seem to be able to order a copy.
Can anybody help?
Thanks Liz

World War One / How old must you be?
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have been told that my grandfather's brother joined the army very young and was killed in World War I.
He was born in 1897, the only death I can find is in October 1916 in Salonika for a Lance corporal.
Is it possible that he could have achieved this rank.

Derbyshire / John Oldknow and Charlotte
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 18:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have John Oldknow in 1841 with Charlotte Oldknow presumably his wife, and a bunch of children living in Nottingham.John born Scotland, his wife & all the children except the youngest born out of county. However on subsequent census the children are born Beeston and Charlotte (who dies 1858)on the 1851 is born Carlton Nottinghamshire.
John's father was James Oldknow who came from Smalley in Derbyshire was in the militia in Scotland and married there, returning to England with his family.
I have found a marriage for John Oldknow to Charlotte Lees in Duffield June 1821 and baptism of James to John & Charlotte Oldknow in  Sept 1821 at Wesleyan Methodist in Belper.
I am not at all sure that I have the right Charlotte,
would the marriage register give me any more information.

Scotland / Jervanophine
« on: Monday 27 September 10 20:16 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor Jane Cormack born about 1809 came to England somewhere between 1836 and 1840,she was married to William Cormack born about 1798
She was on the 1841 census in lancashire,as McCormack and on the 1851 as Cormack.
The 1851 census gives her birth place as Jervanophine Scotland ,unfortunately this particular census was badly damaged so all that is available is the printed version.
Both her and her husband were dead before the 1861 census, and I can't find William in 1851.Their children were born in Aberdeen,Edinburgh and Glasgow,so no help there.
I can't find Jervanophine and I am not familiar with Scottish placenames so that I could hazard a guess.
Suggestions welcome.

What i would like is any further information, witnesses, both of this parish? etc.
