The Common Room / Re: Which records should I go by?
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 04:59 GMT (UK)  »
my OHs grandfather was born William, was William on all census until 1911 when he suddenly became William Wilfred,
was married in 1905 as Wilfred, and on his children's birth certificates and his death certificate was William Wilfred.
I don't know where the Wilfred came from and it took a lot of searching to find him.

Unfortunately the youngest I have found was born 1833,so no help there.
I was hoping there might be witnesses or at least which parish they were from.

Derbyshire / John Oldknow and Charlotte
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 18:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have John Oldknow in 1841 with Charlotte Oldknow presumably his wife, and a bunch of children living in Nottingham.John born Scotland, his wife & all the children except the youngest born out of county. However on subsequent census the children are born Beeston and Charlotte (who dies 1858)on the 1851 is born Carlton Nottinghamshire.
John's father was James Oldknow who came from Smalley in Derbyshire was in the militia in Scotland and married there, returning to England with his family.
I have found a marriage for John Oldknow to Charlotte Lees in Duffield June 1821 and baptism of James to John & Charlotte Oldknow in  Sept 1821 at Wesleyan Methodist in Belper.
I am not at all sure that I have the right Charlotte,
would the marriage register give me any more information.

Derbyshire / Re: any Samuel Fletcher circa 1820 in Derbyshire

Yes those baptisms were on IGI. When I want to find how close places are I just go to mapquest uk and fill in the place names,it's quick and it gives me some idea if the place is more likely.

There are a lot of Samuel Fletchers born around 1820 in Derbyshire, but I found one who was baptized in Baslow,to William and Mary Fletcher.
Baslow is about 12 miles from Ashford,
There is also a baptism at North Wingfield (abt 6 miles)in 1826 extracted.and Shirrland (abt 5 miles)in 1825 submitted.
I have Fletchers born in Heanor (15 miles)but I am still trying to sort out those who belong from those who don't at least not in the last six generations.
Good luck in your endeavors.
