Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re: William Warby - Hythe
« on: Tuesday 26 October 04 15:25 BST (UK)  »
I think he has been mistranscribed as William MORBEY - see

http://www.btinternet.com/~goldingfamily/BaptismsMilitary.html

I have just had a look at the public record office catalogue (PROCAT) and see that his father's army record is there - search for the name WABBY

Also there seems to be a lot of info on this family at http://www.familysearch.org under the ancestral file search.

I've no interest in this family, as far as I know, just familiar with Hythe and some of the families there.

There was a high military presence in Hythe at this time - largely due to the anticipated Napoleonic invasion c1800 and the building of defences ie. martello towers and the Royal Military Canal.

Hope this helps

I am still stuck here if anybody can help

Have now searched 1861 without success 17/3/2005

I am not sure which indexes, if any, are available for the Bow, Upper Clapton, Mile End, Hackney area for 1861 but I am looking for:

Samuel HAGGER bc1852 Bow

Mother, Hannah HAGGER bc1823 Walthamstow/Toll House, Middlesex/Essex

Possible father, Henry HAGGER (a butcher) but this may be a red herring as I have yet to locate any suitable Henry HAGGER/Hannah marriage in the bmd indexes.  Nor is there any suitable birth entry for Samuel.

Samuel is in Upper Clapton 1871 but as a lodger!

I would be most grateful for a look up in any available indexes.

Many thanks

Completed Census Requests / Re: 1861 census look up please HAGGER

Hi Geoff

Many, many thanks for your efforts - why am I not surprised that they're not there?????

They're not the HAGGERTYs you've listed I'm sure but the other listings you've supplied may well come in useful at some stage.

Samuel did marry Mile End/Upper Clapton/Hackney area so maybe they were nearer there.

Thanks again

Completed Census Requests / 1861 census look up please HAGGER
« on: Tuesday 26 October 04 10:29 BST (UK)  »
I would be most grateful for a look up for the following in the 1861 census of Essex - probably in the Walthamstow, Leyton etc. West Ham area:

Samuel HAGGER bc 1852 Bow or Leyton

Hannah HAGGER (mother) bc 1823 Walthamstow or "Toll House"

Possibly father Henry HAGGER, a butcher, but this may be a red herring as I can't find any marriage for a Henry HAGGER to Hannah at present.

Possible variant spelling HAGGAR

Any help greatly appreciated - been stuck here about 15 years!

Many thanks

Hi

Did you know she is at St Paul, Kent 1871 census - age 25 born Canterbury, servant - I haven't viewed the actual page.

Fanny J Brient

Assuming that the birthplace is correct, the Canterbury baptisms have been indexed so there may be somebody out there who has the index ..............?

Shorncliffe Camp is the army barracks - still there and currently in occupation of the ghurka regiment.  If you ancestor was a civilian then it would come under the  parish of Cheriton

Hi Victoria

You may know this already - but just in case - the records for Elham Union are now with East Kent Archives at Whitifield near Dover.  They also have microfilm copies of some registers at Folkestone library.  I'm not sure that these records will give you any more information than what you have already but it may be worth a try.

Hi Dylan

You were really lucky to have found your rellies living in a tent 1851 census because it wasn't necessary to list those not living in houses until 1861 - must have been a very conscientious enumerator!  The law changed for the 1861 census and then there were separate pages titled "Those not living in houses" which were entered at the end of each district - quite easy to find as you can skip to the end of each district - which includes those who slept in tents, barns, sheds, vans etc..

Hence doubt you will find them in 1841 census at all.

The best of luck with your future Gypsy/traveller research
