Technical Help / New Ancestry tree not showing 1st wife
« on: Thursday 27 July 23 08:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi.  I’ve created a number of trees on Ancestry for family and friends so I know the basics about setting up trees.  For a couple of reasons, I just started a new tree solely for my mum’s mother’s branch. I now have a problem that I’ve not previously run across.

Earlier today, I realized that while I can view mum’s gr-grandfather’s first wife’s (Mary’s) profile and make changes to it, when I try to view the entire tree, Mary does not appear.  William’s and Mary’s children appear in “view tree” with a line to just William.  William’s second wife and their children all appear in view tree.

I tried several ideas to rectify the problem and nothing has worked.  I really don’t want to start over by deleting Mary and her children as I’m only 90-95% certain that they were William’s first family so I have typed numerous notes for all of them, indicating why I believe they were his family.  I’ve also included supporting documents (burial records).

Tonight, while looking at the tree again on view tree, I noticed that there is an identical problem with another family member (who was also married twice).

I’ve never had this problem before.  I don’t know how to correct it, short of deleting the entire tree and starting over.  I hope I’ve clearly explained my situation; I know it’s confusing. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated, please.  Thank you, Lisa.

The Common Room / Pen Knife Carving, 1870s, Canada
« on: Monday 24 July 23 07:20 BST (UK)  »
While looking at a distant relative’s family tree on one of the pay sites, I came across a photograph of a framed object that had the description “pen knife carving”.  When I originally saw it a few years ago (and not paying attention to the description!), I thought it was an intricate needlework piece.  Looking at it again, it most likely was not needlework.

It was dated 1876.  While the image is in Annie’s “gallery” on Ancestry, it may not have been created by her.  Annie’s father was a joiner and carpenter (I believe her brother was also a carpenter).  Perhaps one of the three carved it (she would have been 20 years old at the time).

Has anyone ever seen a carving that resembles needlework?  After a quick look on the internet, I didn’t find anything at all.  I can contact the person who posted the photograph for facts about the artwork but I’m curious if knife carvings (that resemble needlework) were commonly crafted during the 1800s.  Thank you for your interest.  Lisa

Europe / Oroseni, 1920s. Romania?
« on: Wednesday 12 July 23 02:33 BST (UK)  »
I am helping a friend.  I’ve found documents with Oroseni, Romania.  However, I cannot locate the town on any maps. Any suggestions, please, exactly where this town was located?  ??? Thank you in advance, Lisa

Monaghan / McCabe - Magheracloone, pre-1844
« on: Wednesday 28 June 23 22:13 BST (UK)  »
After reading a post about McCabes of Carrickmacross, I am intrigued about my ggggrandmother, Sarah McCabe, as she gave birth to (or baptized) at least one child in Magheracloone, Monaghan which is a relatively short distance from Carrickmacross. I’ve been researching my other ancestors for decades but I don’t believe I’ve ever spent much time trying to learn more about Sarah McCabe, most likely born early 1800s, as other relatives researched our McCabes.

According to research done by my mum’s 2nd-3rd cousins, Sarah’s children:
  1.  (Mary?) Bridget Marren (possibly Marron), born 10 Apr 1831, Magheracloone
Bridget was our direct ancestor.  We have full details of her life in Canada.
According to the 1861 census, she, her husband and children were Roman Catholic.
  2.  Peter Marren/Marron, born c1838, Ireland (last found in 1861 in Ontario, Canada)
  3?  John?
Parents of the above two, possibly three, children: Andrew Marren/Marron and Sarah McCabe.
According to one relative (and multiple family trees), Andrew and Sarah sailed to North America in 1844 and died during the voyage.  I have not yet found the voyage nor death details.

So far, I have not yet found additional Irish details about our McCabes using Ancestry.  I have not yet searched FamilySearch.  Would it be best to look at Monaghan resource suggestions or might someone have knowledge of where I might be able to find additional details about this family, please?  Thank you for reading my long, most likely confusing, post.  Lisa

Added:  I have at least one DNA match to someone who has a John Thomas McCabe, born 1854, Carrickmacross.  Perhaps there were a number of McCabes in the area around that time.  Or, perhaps I’m not related to this match through McCabe.  ;)

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ethnicity inheritance
« on: Friday 23 June 23 15:22 BST (UK)  »
My mum’s maternal great-grandparents were born in Ireland (Co. Fermanagh, Tuam-Co. Galway, Co. Wicklow and Belfast-Co. Antrim/Co. Down).  I believe four of her gggp were born in the same areas; I don’t know about the others.

Looking at Anc*try’s ethnicity inheritance, she inherited from her maternal side
Ireland - 2%
England & NW Europe - 26%
Scotland - 22%

I’ve read that DNA percentages are estimates, Belfast would actually be in the Scottish category, borders change, and we inherit different DNA amounts from our relatives/ancestors, but looking at the above percentages might it be plausible that her mother’s ancestors had not lived in Ireland for generations, as she believed?

Any insight would be gratefully welcomed.  Thank you, Lisa

The Common Room / Question about wording in Canadian 1928 obituary
« on: Monday 19 June 23 08:42 BST (UK)  »
My mum’s family thought their ancestor was born in Tuam, Galway, Ireland (in 1822).  After researching the internet, there is a possibility that the family was from Ballinasloe, Galway.  There are topics on RootsChat about her, and about her possible distant relatives.

My latest question is about the wording that I found in one of her obituaries.

“…spent her childhood in Tuam, in the South of Ireland, where she was born. …”

Should the above be interpreted as
she spent her childhood and was born in Tuam, or
she was born in the south of Ireland (but not in Tuam), or
it could easily be interpreted either way

Any thoughts would be most welcomed, please.  Thank you, Lisa

PS. Before reading the obituary, we believed her family (parents, at least) could have been from Ballinasloe, but I still have difficulty accepting this as Tuam was mentioned in the family bible (which actually could have been written during the late 1800s).

Canada / 1931 census: race or tribe - Irish (not English)
« on: Saturday 10 June 23 08:45 BST (UK)  »
While I’ve run across incorrect names and dates on census returns, I’ve rarely run across puzzling facts. Tonight, I found something puzzling but perhaps it was simply a communication problem?

1931 Ontario census - Gertrude, age 40, William, age 39 (wife and husband)
Gertrude was recorded as born in Ontario (parents born in England), “race or tribe” was English.
That is correct.  Gertrude’s parents, grandparents and most likely her great-grandparents were all born in England.

William was recorded as born in Ontario (parents born in Ontario). That also is correct.
However, William’s race or tribe was recorded as Irish; William’s and Gertrude’s children were born in Ontario and recorded as race: Irish.

William’s paternal family/ancestors were born in England to at least the 1750s.  William’s mother was born in Ontario but her parents were born in Ireland c1820s.

According to relatives, William enjoyed talking about his paternal side. To my knowledge, he never talked about any Irish family and neither his children nor other family even knew they had Irish ancestors.  When I discovered that William’s maternal grandparents were born in Ireland, William’s children were just short of shocked.

The puzzling part: could it have simply been a recording error?  Has anyone ever run across a similar situation?  William’s mother was still alive in 1931 (but not living in his household); perhaps she was visiting and told the census enumerator that William was (and his children were) Irish?  Because William enjoyed telling anyone family stories, I have difficulty believing he or his wife stated that he was Irish.  Thank you for reading this long message, Lisa.

PS. I know the Irish notation is trivial but I always thought his mother was an only child. When we found out William’s mother had several siblings, and aunts and uncles, I was very surprised. This family has been a mystery since I started searching so long ago.

The Common Room / Meaning: hath by indenture?
« on: Friday 12 May 23 20:41 BST (UK)  »
An 1840 newspaper mentioned:
“James Mumford…hath by indenture…bearing the date of…1840…Assigned over all his Personal Estate and Effects to…for the benefit of such his Creditors…”

There is more to the article but I’m wondering what “hath by indenture” means, please.

I can post the link to the newspaper article (normally a pay site, but free this weekend) if it isn’t against RootsChat rules.

Thank you for any assistance.  Lisa

Technical Help / Speedtest safe to use on iPad?
« on: Sunday 02 April 23 09:45 BST (UK)  »
Hello.  I have a couple of favourite games that I play on my iPad.  I have trouble running one of the games; it freezes (I’m not the only one who has problems with the game). I followed their instructions to resolve my problems (closing other applications, removing the game, etc.).  Nothing has worked.  Now I’m being told to use a speedtest and then send them a screenshot of the network quality. (I don’t know if I’m allowed to use the exact name here.)

My question: would something like this be safe to do - running the test, then sending them a screenshot of the results? I don’t trust anything about the internet after receiving viruses, etc. (years ago).  Any guidance would be very appreciated.  Thank you, Lisa
