Thanks for the offer kriesjoint

As mentioned in my last post, I really do hope that Mary's ashes have not been scattered before any photo of a memorial has been taken.

Due to family tragedy Mary was raised by a family other than her own so it has taken be a lot of searching to find her. Someone has her name on A* but as I cannot afford to become a member I will remain disconnected from them.

I only hope the death notices in the newspapers will be of some assistance.

Thanks once again Dawn

Thanks Deeiluka and Cando for your informative links regarding Mary. I have emailed both saghs and gravesecrets in the hope of obtaining additional information.

I am hoping Mary's remains have not been scattered before any memorial what photographed. I was able to photograph her brother's plaques before their ashes were scattered and the plaques melted down. So sad and so wrong.

I will wait with hope.

Lincolnshire / Re: Crow / Crowe family of South Reston / Louth

Hi Diddy,

Thanks for the input.  I have found the family on 1901 Census and John Edward with his wife Ede Thompson in her parent's house in 1891. From here I appear to be able to go back a bit through the census info.

I had hoped that I may find someone within the extended family. The possible marriage for Arthur Edward to Elisa Cram should help bring me forward in time. I believe my grandfather lost contact with his siblings when he emigrated.

I searched the 1911 Cenus for Ede Crow as this is the most unique name. It gave me the extra brother William Crow born 1903 but John Thomas Crow had left home by that time. I did not find him on the census as John Thomas and of course there were 100s of John Crows.

I will have a look for military service for pops siblings. My grandfather served in the 1st Life Guards from 1915 to 1922. How he came to join them is unknown. I had hoped family may have been able to tell me. I had thought it was a regiment in which gentlemen served but pop appears to be a farmers son.

Family History Beginners Board / Irish family to Australia
« on: Thursday 04 June 09 13:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am new to Rootschat from Australia.

I am not sure where to put this post. I have tried Kilkenny Ireland to no avail so I wondered if anyone had any other suggestions.

My great great grandmother Mary Byrn arrived with her parents and siblings to Tasmania Australia in 1854 on the Maitland from Portsmouth England. By the Australia record it sailed June 3rd 1854 arriving Sept 16 1854. It is believed emigrants on this ship were under an agreement to repay cost of passage before leaving Tasmania (Indenture System).

Family consisted of John Byrn age 35 (or 25 - record has been overwritten) Native place Kilkenny, Labourer
Eleanor Byrn (maiden name unknown - Tasmanian death does not show maiden name, nor is then any recorded births in Tasmania for her maiden name to be recorded - although births occurred and were not registered)
age 29 Native place Kilkenny, Dairy Maid
Mary Byrn age 10 (although family tale says she was age 7 when she arrived)
Native Kilkenny
James Byrn age 3, Native Kilkenny
Catherine Byrn age 1, Native Kilkenny
All family members were listed as Roman Catholic

Would there be English records showing more detail on the voyage from Portsmouth? I have no idea how they moved from Kilkenny to England but it must have been within a year of sailing from Portsmouth as Catherine aged 1 is listed as a native of Kilkenny (that is if the record is correct).

On John Byrn's (also written as Byrne) death in Tasmania on Aug 24 1880  it was requested that American papers to copy the newspaper death notice on 27th Aug so some other family may have gone to America.

I do not know where to go from here. Any suggestions would be wonderful. I am at a complete brick wall.

Kildare / Truth / Fiction Glasgo family tale
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 12:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am new to this board from Australia.

I am hoping someone may be able to confirm or disprove a tale / fact that my husband and I have come across in relation to one of his family lines.

Charles McRae head of clan McRae in Scotland at the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie was meant to have fled Scotland for Ireland (changing his name to Glasgo) following the famous battle of Culloden Moore. He was then to have married an Irish girl who bore him a son. Charles Glasgo then by name died. The Scots wanting an heir to the clan offered that they should take the boy and raise him as the head of the clan with all the wealth and title. She refused and elected to raise him herself in the Catholic faith and forgo all wealth.

His grandson was Thomas Glasgo whose grandson Charles Glasgow (aged 40 a gardener) immigrated to Australia in 1840  on the Elphinstone with his wife Julia and children John, Thomas, Anne, Daniel and James.

We have so far only information on the family in Australia. Any leads for Ireland would be greatly appreciated.

Kilkenny / Marriage & Birth look up for Byrn / e
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 10:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am new to Rootschat and hoping to solve my mystery.

Looking for a marriage between John Byrn born approx 1830 (sometimes spelt Byrne) in Kilkenny to Ellen / Eleanor born approx 1825 (sorry no surname) before 1850.

Children born also to this couple in Kilkenny.

Mary (Mary Ann) Byrn born approx 1844-1847 (ships list says age 10, but family says aged 7 when come to Australia in 1854)
James Byrn born born approx 1851-52
Catherine Byrn born approx 1853-54

Family immigrated from Portsmouth in England on board the Maitland in 1854. I do not know when or how they travelled to England. Ship record says all were born in Kilkenny Ireland.

Lincolnshire / Crow / Crowe family of South Reston / Louth
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 10:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am new to the board from Australia.

I am wondering if anyone is researching the name Crow / Crowe in the South Reston or Louth area.

Family consists of John Edward Crow b approx 1865 who married Ede Thompson before 1891. Children John Thomas abt 1891, Charles Wilfred 1895, Arthur Edward abt 1899, Albert abt 1901 & William abt 1903.

No idea what happened to John Thomas, Arthur Edward, Albert or William. One was meant to have gone to Canada (name unknown). Charles Wilfred immigrated to Australia.

John Edward Crow's parents from my research look to be John Crow abt 1822 and Rachel Thompson abt 1825. John Edward Crow's brother George appears to have married Rachel's sister Sarah Thompson b abt 1818.

Hoping to find connections.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Re: Burial look up - Crow / Crowe Louth area

Thanks Nottschick for the death information.

As I live in Australia and have not come across someone being admitted to a workhouse before. What does it mean for their deaths to be recorded on the Lincolnshire Workhouse Death records? What does the word "workhouse" mean in this context when we are talking about older people?

I know here in Australia in the last century elderly people were admitted to Asylums when they were unable to care for themselves. They were not mentally ill but in need of care. Is it similar with the term "Workhouse". Did the workhouse in fact act as an aged care facility?

I was hoping the record would say where they were buried.

Thanks again Dawn
