Considering the fact that Passenger lists show many children were born on the voyage, I have an inkling that I know what they were doing - or not wearing!!  ;D

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry message system working??

It might be worth trying to post a message to the Ancestry Facebook Page!  I tried that once when I had a glitch on my tree that I couldn't find a way to rectify!   It's pretty useless trying to enquire about something you're stuck with on your tree if you use the " Contact us" button, you probably won't get a reply. On the Facebook page, your requests or comments are out in the open, so they would have to respond pretty quickly, to save face! Maybe there will be similar requests on there that would help!  Worth a try anyway!

And since the arrival of the DNA testing, they're probably getting lots of questions about those too!
Maybe there will be similar requests.

The Lighter Side / Re: How to pronounce ancestors names.

Most English people wouldn't sound the 'r' in 'carnt' (if it was an actual word), though those in the south west might. Am I right in thinking that a Scot would normally sound it (again, if it was a real word)?

When I first wrote 'carnt' I was thinking about the majority-English way of saying it, and completely forgot that Scots sometimes sound 'r' differently (I think).

A Scot would say canny instead of can or cannot.

My Dad had a friend whose surname name was Featherstonehaugh -  pronounced Fanshaw!

Well, I do now Gadget 😜😜👎

After having lost contact with those relatives for so long now, I was delighted to get a private message from a different relative, regarding my DNA results! She was keen to share each other's trees, as my Douglas Scottish Grandmother Jane Dreghorn Douglas, and my Dad's 2 half- sisters, are in my tree as well as hers!  So now we're busy sharing more photos, stories records etc., and it's great!

I've got one for you, I once visited a relative in Scotland, when I phoned her to say I was coming, but when I got on the bus, I mispronounced the place, and the driver didn't have a clue what I was saying! ??? ??? ???

This is why!  https://www.pronouncenames.com/pronounce/milngavie

If a Hiscock married a Hercock, would their married name be hyphenated or would they change it to Theircock?  ???
