The Common Room / Re: Infant death?

Hi Aghadowey

I have the birth certificate.  No he was the third of six.  I thought that his parents might have gone back to one of the churches where they were baptised (Hadzor and Bromsgrove respectively) or married (the latter).  No joy there either.

Sunnee_Dee (great name btw)

Thanks.  I had found that one but ruled it out as there was no connection with the area and the stated age was a year out (I know there can be a little flexibility in ages).  Should have mentioned that in my first post - sorry.

The Common Room / Infant death?

I recently found a brother of my Nan's that no-one knew existed.  Harry Chance was born in Droitwich, Worcs on 17 August 1915, the birth eventually being registered on 11 November that year.  Parents Arthur Henry and Nelly Chance.

No problem so far.  As I said no-one knew who he was.  My Nan never mentioned him to any of her family - she was born 18 months after him.  I therefore assumed that he died in infancy but there is no death certificate for him.  I've looked under as many variations of 'Harry' and 'Chance' that I can think of on Free BMD and tried wider searches on just the christian name to see what that threw out.  I've been to the History Centre in Worcester today and couldn't find either a baptism or burial for him. HIs siblings were all baptised within 6 weeks of birth.

My working hypothesis is that he was stillborn and therefore couldn't be baptised or buried in consecrated ground.  However his mother wanted to acknowledge his existence and eventually registered his birth.  Is this possible or does anyone have any other possible explanations?

Grateful for any opinions/advice

Andy

Hi Clare

I've lived in Droitwich most of my life and never came across Harris Hill.  However a quick Google search revealed that it was close to the Workhouse.

Sorry I couldn't find anything more

Forgot to add if you Google 'nail making in Bromsgrove' you will get quite a bit of background info on the nailmaking industry.  Apologies if you've already done this!

The parish registers for Bromsgrove during the period you're interested in are held on microfilm at the Worcestershire Library and History Centre in Worcester.  See link below.  Last time I was there copies were 70p per sheet of A4.

Good luck with your search.

It appears that these may be held at Redditch Library.  See attached link.
