Technical Help / Re: Windows 10 April update
« on: Tuesday 01 May 18 15:13 BST (UK)  »
I won't be getting it anytime soon.  My PC has been trying to upload an animalware security update for about a week now, with a que of other updates behind it.  Cannot update the animalware thing and  just sits there saying there is a problem.  But I can't do anything with it.  Apparently looking at google I am not the only person with this problem and at some point I guess MS might get around to sorting it.  Until then I watch the little dots going up and down as it checks for updates before the error message appears again.  The joys of Windows updates!

Armed Forces / Reasons for disappearing after army desertion
« on: Monday 05 February 18 15:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have an interesting one here.  A friend asked me to do a bit of research into one of her ancestors who deserted the British Army in 1905.  He resurfaces a year later with a different name and for the rest of his life, he died in 1962, he is known by a different name.  The family have evidence to show it is the same person.

The question she asked me was could I find the reason for his change of name and as far as I can see there is no other reason but for the desertion.  A quick google, brings up other instances of the same thing happening and that is what my instinct is telling me, to avoid court martial and whatever punishment might come, he changed his name.

My question is has anyone seen a book or any other written record about deserters changing their name that I can send her to?

Thank you

Hi

Unfortunately these Pilbeams don’t appear on my tree.  Mine are all in the Dallington area of East Sussex.  I agree with KGarrad, your best bet to find her father at least, is to order the marriage certificate.  You never know there may be a clue amongst the witnesses too.

Technical Help / Re: Weird problem with laptop since latest Windows 10 update

I bought my MacBook Pro 2 years ago but haven't really used it much.  Took it to France two summers ago because if fitted so nicely at the bottom of the suitcase.  I like you kept my old laptop going because of Family Historian.

However I have downloaded onto the Mac,Treeview and started to use it and it is actually ok.  Version 2 is better than version 1 which had various problems.  So far no problems and it does everything that FH does, just differently so I am going to persevere.  Apparently there is a way to use FH on a virtual something or other on a Mac but on FHUG there were too many different opinions and options and I just got confused.

I bought a CD for work last year for the latest version of Photoshop elements and found included, was a Mac CD too so have put that on the Mac, so I now feel right at home.  8)

My old laptop seems to be in a pemanent state of Automatic Repair now, despite me doing all the reboot routines.

It's a good excuse to get a new one  - but hate all that setting up  ::)

Anyone got any recommendations for a new one?

All I can say is get a Mac!  Life is too short to sit around all day waiting for MS to upload updates to a laptop, most of which at the end of the day is stuff I don't want and won't use anyway!

But that is probably not want you want to hear because I think you use Macs anyway.

You could uninstall the other one when it's finished being installed!  I'm glad uninstalling one of them has solved your problem though.  I'd never heard of Word updates causing problems until recently.

Uninstalled both the updates from my work laptop and for the first day in a couple of weeks it has done that strange sudden closedown and restart.  So I think it is sorted.  Thank you

Thanks Lizzie, have just managed to uninstall one of those updates and I have screen resolution back to normal.  Unfortunately the other update is being installed as I speak and I can’t do anything about it.

My 10 year old Dell studio now has large fuzzy fonts and no way to change the screen resolution back to what it was, googling brought up something about graphics card being obsolete, I've given up on it, I was replacing it with a MacBook Pro that I bought last year anyway.  Time to transfer and put it away.
That could be a problem with the graphics card driver. I had a different problem because the Intel graphics card driver hadn't been tested properly before release.
It would be worth seeing if you can update the driver.
Thank you Graham, I will investigate that at the weekend.  I need time to sit down and stay calm  ::) ::)  Kerry
