For the last couple of days (Monday 22nd May 2023 to Tuesday 23rd) I've been totally locked out of RootsChat by Cloudflare.

It starts with Cloudflare's "Verify you"re human" tick box, which I always tick. That's the first screenshot I've attached.

It then changes to "Verifying". That's the second screenshot.

After that it used to let me into the site.

But for the past couple of days it's not been letting me in. Instead it's been going to the "Verify you're human" again, resulting in me being stuck in an interminable Cloudflare loop.

I couldn't even look at RootsChat to find a contact address. I ended up searching on Google for "Cloudflare verify you are human loop" and it seems to be a not uncommon problem. I found several posts on the Cloudfare website's community forum from irritated end users who'd been suddenly locked out of various websites by this.

I tried using a different computer. I tried two different mobile phones on both wifi and mobile network. On each I tried two different browsers. I switched off my router, left it a few minutes, turned it back on and tried again. Same problem every time.

So I posted a new topic on their Turnstile forum (I believe turnstile is the  name Cloudflare give to the Captcha-less verify you're human, which is what RootsChat appear to be using). Here's the link in case anybody's interested.

https://community.cloudflare.com/t/stuck-in-verify-you-are-human-loop/513131

I'm not sure whether it was pure coincidence, but less than an hour later I was able to get into RootsChat again.

I've still had no replies to the topic at Cloudflare

The Common Room / How to match a UK GRO death record with a probate record ?
« on: Friday 19 May 23 11:54 BST (UK)  »
Having very little free cash available I have to be very careful spending any on certificates. Since GRO death records are relatively expensive (£11), usually contain little useful information (for me anyway), and are often (for me) the wrong person, I've started going for the probate records instead.

They're cheaper (£1.50), also contain little useful information (for me anyway), but up till now I've always got the correct one - the (free) probate record index information for the ones I've obtained contained sufficient information for me to be certain it was the right person; an address and/or the name of a family member or two.

I've done this successfully a few times.

However, I've now been pointed at a likely GRO index death record for a great uncle about whom we know next to nothing except his birth date (3 Jun 1904) and that he likely left Ireland and moved to England:

Deaths, 1981, Q2, James Corbett, b.3 June 1904, Bexley, v11, p395

Following my previously successful approach I went to https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/ , entered his name and year of death, and got one document page returned. I found one James Corbett on it - but his address is in Peterborough and he died 9 July 1981 which doesn't match the quarter from the GRO BMD. So that's clearly not the same person.

I've tried the following few years as suggested on the probate site, from 1982 to 1986, but none of those have our man.

Does anybody have any ideas ?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Another cause of death
« on: Monday 10 April 23 15:51 BST (UK)  »
Something of breast and a fracture ?

And what does it say about Sullivan at the district hospital ?

I may be wrong, but there are two really obvious (to me) indications that should be visible on the overall tree diagram:

1) Whether a couple are known to have had no children, as opposed to no children having yet been found.

2) Whether a couple were married (i.e. legitimate children) or unmarried (illegitimate).

I'd be very pleased if I've simply not found how to do it maybe hidden in plain sight?) - can somebody tell me ?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Badly faded handwriting on a photo
« on: Monday 27 February 23 16:52 GMT (UK)  »
We've just found a studio portrait of one of my great aunts we believe, and it has something written on it. Despite the ink being badly faded we think we know what it says, but we'd like a second opinion or two

Ireland / RC marriage in 1930s Ireland, divorce in England ? Possible ?
« on: Monday 27 February 23 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
I've just read that divorce only became possible in Ireland in 1995 ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifteenth_Amendment_of_the_Constitution_of_Ireland ).

In the UK the number of divorces appears to have been rapidly increasing through the 1940s ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divorce_in_England_and_Wales ).

So was it possible that a couple who had married in Ireland in the 30s got divorced in the UK in the 1940s ?

Cork / 6th Battalion, Cork No 2 Bgde, Old IRA - which area ?
« on: Sunday 26 February 23 05:00 GMT (UK)  »
I found this:

https://www.corkcity.ie/en/cork-public-museum/exhibitions/past-present-exhibitions/the-republican-forces.html

However, it only identifies battalions by area, and only after the 1921 splitting off of No 4 Bgde:

- 4 Bgde had 5 battalions (Mallow, Kanturk, Charleviile, Newmarket and Millstreet)

- 2 Bgde had 4 battalions (Fermoy, Lismore, Castletownroche and Glanworth).

So, does anybody know what the original seven battalions of Cork No 2 Bgde were - numbers and areas ?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Can you read the cause of death ?

I can't make head or tail of the first two lines, although I'm fairly sure that the last two are "Six months certified". Can anybody help ?

Here's the link to the original document at Irish Genealogy if you need to see more of the handwriting. It's the first entry, number 432

The Common Room / Any ideas for contacting somebody who made just one post here ?
« on: Sunday 18 September 22 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Has anybody else run into this sort of thing ? You find a message in a RootsChat topic that's been posted, apparently, by an unknown relative of yours. So you excitedly start typing your response... but then you notice that the post was made a couple of years ago, and it was the only post that the user ever made. You investigate further by checking the user's stats: it appears that they joined RootsChat solely to make that specific post (date registered was just before the post was made), and it looks as if they were watching for a reply for maybe a month (their last login was about a month after they registered).

Being an optimist I'll start by assuming a couple of things:
  • the person is still around
  • they didn't fiddle with the settings when they set up their RootsChat account, so they'll receive email notifications from RootsChat for certain things
  • they still use/have access to the email address they used for registering at RootsChat
  • they are still interested in family history

So the first two things to try are those that'll prompt RootsChat to send them an email notification, i.e.
  • Post a reply to the topic. Assuming that they have email notifications set then they'll get an email from RootsChat.
  • Send a PM (personal message). Although it is generally understood that a user must have made 2 or 3 posts to be able to use the PM system this isn't quite true. A test done way back in 2009 (so it's possible that things might have changed) by Tati and Geoff-E (linked from here) indicated that you were able to send one, but only one, PM to a user who had only made a single post. Although they would be unable to reply via PM, they'd get an email notification that they'd received a PM
And then wait for at least a month to allow for holidays, catching them at a bad time, etc.

It's been a little over a month now and there's been no response (My particular person in question is user 105802020 who posted reply #13 on PS73's "Corbet /Sweeney /Martin cousins" topic).

So does anybody have any more ideas for contacting somebody who made just one post here at RootsChat ?
