Elizabeth Ayers
« on: Wednesday 26 October 05 15:57 BST (UK) »
Hi I am desperately looking for a baptism record of Elizabeth Ayres who according to the 1871 England Census was born in Kilkenny abt 1812.

I believe she was the 2nd wife of my GGG Grandfather James Lovett born abt 1814 in South Africa.

His first wife Ann Malaughney was born in Ireland (no idea where !) abt 1821.

I cannot find any record of either marriage.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Lainey,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Roman Catholic Parish records are now available on line

Try St Patrick's parish first

Hi, looking at parish registers, I could find no marriage for James Lovett to either Elizabeth Ayres nor Ann Malaughney. I found 2 births for Elizabeth Ayre/Eyres one in 1805 co Antrim and one 1804 co Dublin but none in county Kilkenny. As to Ann Malaugney, I found 23 between 1811-1831 although the name is coming up as Mullowny/Moloney which to me seems a bit off. The spelling issue could make her birth hard to trace.
I then looked at the Tithe Applotment Books 1814-1855 and came up with the following Ayers in co Kilkenny. David Aher 1823 Castlecomer, John Eyre 1827 Clomantagh, Richard Eyre 1833 Muckalee & a ----- Eyre in 1826 Freshford. One of these may be Elizabeth's father. Hope something is useful, Kim
