Relative in Boston
« on: Thursday 27 October 05 13:04 BST (UK) »
I've heard tales of my gg grandma who supposedly 'got shipped off to America' after having an illegitimate child.  I don't know when she went or where she went from/to, all I know is that she ran a guest house in Boston called Mimosa or Magnolia Cottage.

Does anyone know where I'd find details of her departure or details of the guest house?

What dates approximately?  When was she born?  You might be able to find her in ship arrivals (very difficult to find people in the departure records in England as they're not indexed), either into NY or Boston probably, and then in the US censuses... those will give you an address if you can find her, maybe at the guest house if you're lucky!
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Neither Magnolia nor Mimosa Cottage sounds very Bostonian.  These are southern trees that don't normally grow in New England.

What was her name? There are lots of USA ships passengers lists you can search, but a year (even a guess) and a name is needed.

You can start searching at http://shipslists-online.rootschat.net/
