Charles Dickinson - Nottingham
« on: Friday 28 October 05 21:21 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Charles Dickinson was born in Radford, perhaps in 1835. There is an IGI entry for Charles Dickinson, son of Hannah Dickinson baptised on 16 Aug 1835 in Radford.

On October 12 1857 Charles married Amy Dickinson at St Nicholas, Nottingham.  Charles appears as Dickisson, and stated that his father was Edward Dickisson, cabinet maker.

On July 4 1858 their son William Dickinson was born in Basford. William became a carpenter. He married Belinda Sibley and they lived in the Hampton and Teddington area near London.

Charles was variously a lace dryer/dresser; a master pork butcher; a joiner; a furniture dealer; and a cabinet maker.

Amy died on August 16 1871. Charles married Ann Priscilla Jackson in 1873.  Ann died in 1891.

Any connections?

Michael

Yes, there is a Charles baptised at Radford 16/08/1835 to Hannah Dickinson, lace mender.

My first instinct would be that he was illegitimate but there are also these baptisms and I wonder if his father died before his birth?

All at Radford to Edward and Hannah Dickinson

Ann 16/04/1824
Sarah 20/02/1827
Elizabeth 26/09/1830

Maybe someone could spot any of these girls in 1841, if only to rule the family out?

Thank you for the replies.

Samuel Dickinson and Lydia Kirk had 10 children in the Arnold area of Nottingham, including Charles who was 5 in 1841. I do not feel that this is my Charles for "geographical reasons". My Charles mentons "Old Radford" as his birthplace in the 1881 census; he did not report "Arnold" in any census.

The 4 year old boy in the Radford workhouse is the one that I assume/guess is my ancestor.

Edward Dickinson and Hannah Towlson had those three daughters. Edward was a frame work knitter, and was alive in 1861.

Edward (born in 1804) was the son of William Dickinson and Martha Burton. Edward had a younger sister Hannah (born 1806). I have wondered whether Hannah Dickinson (1806) is the mother of the Charles Dickinson born on 1835.

Well, that is impressive! A marriage too! Hannah claims she was born in 1818 so I assume she is not the daughter of William Dickinson and Martha Burton (their daughter Hannah born 1806).

We have Edward, cabinet making, Hannah and a Charles Dickinson of a suitable age. What more could one ask? (I presume Charles is listed as Charles Dickinson in that 1851 census return - the D is your abbreviation?).

I have not seen this 1851 census entry, but I do have records for Charles Dickinson in 1861, 1871 and 1881.

My Dickinson database contains a Hannah Dickinson baptised February 25, 1816 in Radford. She is the daughter of Henry Dickinson and Anne Unknown. This couple had three daughters between 1813 and 1818.
Also, I have a Henry Dickinson who married Ann Nelson on September 4 1797 in Radford. They had 5 children between 1799 and 1812.

Thank you again,

Michael

You're welcome - it certainly ticks the boxes.

Not my abbreviation - I type "as is" :)

Charles is listed as Charles D Sotheron, but it's not unusual for children to be listed under their parents new name in a census

I have received a copy of the marriage certificate for Edward Sotheron and Hannah Dickison.

Additional information obtained from the certificate:

Edward was a widower and the son of the late John Sotheron, a cabinet maker. Hannah was a spinster and  the daughter of the late Henry Dickison, a labourer. Both were of full age.

The couple were living on Long Row. The wedding was performed by the curate George Lovely. Witnesses were Bedford Pillman and Elizabeth Cummins.

Glad to see you're getting somewhere Michael. Possible Hannah baptised at Radford to Henry and Ann 25/02/1816. plus a fair few possible siblings from 1797 to 1818 if you want those?

Likely marriage Henry Dickinson and Ann Nelson Radford St Peter 04/09/1797
