Candy family of Londonderry
« on: Thursday 26 August 04 07:13 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on the Candy family of Londonderry.
James Candy [ born approx 1850? – died approx 1924] was Station master of Londonderry. Probably his father came over from Somerset to work building the Irish railway system but this is not certain.
James's Wife – name and maiden name  unknown

James’s 9 Children [probably born in Derry]
Joseph [ engineer]
Molly [ died in flu epidemic approx 1918 nursing the family]
Dorothy [ teacher, never married]
Thomas [ Radiologist, my grandfather, moved to Newport Wales ]
Madeleine [ teacher, moved to  India, died having twins]
Adelaide [ teacher, not married]
Gertrude [ teacher, one child]
James [ Doctor GP, no male children]
Norbert [died age 12]

I would be very grateful if you know anything about this Candy family – especially any years of birth, death, James Candy’s wife’s name etc etc – anything is interesting.
Thanks,
Jonathan Candy

Hi,

There are railway records of some sort 1870 to 1950 Irish transport genealogical archives at Heuston station here in Dublin.

Any birth, marriage or death post 1864 in Derry should have been registered. Check the indexes available in the GRO in Dublin or your local family history centre.

I can't see any Candy families in the Griffiths valuation in Derry, just in Wexford, Down and Antrim.

regards

Kate

Thank for your suggestion. I now have quite a bit of information on this family
see http://gisweb.athena.bcit.ca/jcandy/candy.htm

I am now looking for more information on Phelan Candy, born Jan 19 1829, Camolin, Wexford, died Jan 28 1890 Coleraine. He was a carpenter and married to Sarah Jane Magee,Born 1834, died Dec 31 1893 Belfast.
They had at least 5 children: James, Robert, Thomas, Sarah Jane and Margaret Candy.

Only 2 Candy BMD in Coleraine district-
Son Robert born 1864 Coleraine- looks like he died 1865 (death not yet online)

Phelan Candy, age 58, died 1890 Belfast district not Coleraine
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
