Royal Navy 1856
« on: Thursday 26 August 04 09:29 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help with information on a Richard Ball.

He served on the Exmouth during the Baltic War  circa 1856

Seems to have left the Navy around 1862.

Thanks
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

you may have already tried the national archives website, but if not, it's a good place to start.

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.asp

Searching the catalogue there might give you a reference to Richard Ball, particularly if he claimed a naval pension.

Just put his name into the search field - the dates you are interested in and ADM (for admiralty) in the department or series code field.

Also you could search for the muster roll for the Exmouth by putting Exmouth into the search field - the dates you want and then ADM again in the series codes. this should bring up references to documents such as the ship's log and the muster roll from which you should be able to get some details of Richard Ball.

The website only gives references and you might then need to get in touch with the National Archives about how to access the actual docs.

Cheers

Andy

Adrian,
There is a mariners list that will accept queries on genealogical stuff provided the person was in the navay.  The address is marine@beavis.co.uk

You will certainly get a reply.

Thanks Reg,

This was a request on behalf of a very kind lady in New Zealand who has been helping me with my search there.  I have passed the email address onto her (although I now know she is looking at this site)
