  Hi Lorraine,
The maps are much appreciated and will go a long way towards identifying the area of "settlement", we have received news from the 1901+1911 cencus which identifies Thomas Begley ( born Middlesbrough) as living with his grand-mother Margaret ( Murphy) in Forkhill which is excellent and just the link we are looking for, Owen Begley son of Margaret is also living there in both 1901+1911.
Peter Begley is dead by the 1901 cencus but alive in 1891 so we are now looking for clues as to find his death certificate, any info anyone has on the Murphy side which could connect would be extremely helpful.

  Regards

      Dandy

Yes the Murphys are linked into the McAleaveys aswell - they seemed to intermarry a lot - I have a few records of them.  Next time I'm looking up records I'll keep an eye out but it won't be for quite a few weeks until I'm able to get to PRONI!  If you pick up any McAleaveys please reply - we seem to be looking in the same small area.

By the way an American McAleavey descendant from Forkhill is friendly with a Barney Begley whose family orginally came from Forkhill.  I have found that American cousins often have treasured the photographs and letters from Ireland - it may be worth contacting them.  I would bet that they may be related.  Would you be interested in a connection?  Have you found any McAleaveys yet?

Michael Murphy - Books
« Reply #17 on: Tuesday 23 May 06 14:32 BST (UK) »
Michael Murphy published a number of books about the people of Slieve Gullion.  There is a reference to a Peter Begley of Dromantee Digging a Grave in this one:

Sayings and Stories from Slieve Gullion
Michael J Murphy
ISBN 0-85221-115-5
Dundalgan Press Ltd 1990

Dromantee is next to Forkhill.
