But where was David?  Why did he not take the name Grant as a surname? Who exactly were his parents and was he illegitimate?

I would be grateful for any information about David Grant Carlisle/Carlyle.

I suspect that looking at the birth date for David (1892) and the Marriage date for his mother Jane (1896) that he was illegitimate and that is why he took his mother's surname but his father's surname as a middle name.

Thanks for this - I suspect that David may well have been illegitimate but would like to know for sure.  Also, I would be interested to receive any info about his mother Jane\Jeanie Carlyle or CARLISLE b: 1870.
