British Army in Ireland
« on: Thursday 03 November 05 10:44 GMT (UK) »
My 3x gtgrandad's army regiment was in Ireland from 1807-1813.

Where was he likelt to have been and why did the British army have to be there at that time.

thanks

The Britsh Army was stationed in many places in Ireland. The largest military centre at that time was Cork.
There was continuous strife since about 1798 and the army was there to attempt to control that.
Google something "Ireland Troubles" or "Ireland Fenians" and you will be able to read about this period.  8)
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Hiya,

I did find about the rebellions of 1798 and 1803, so I am glad that you confirmed they were there for that reason.

Couldnt find out about where the army was though so thanks for that.

Did this control involve soldiers getting killed at all ?

Thanks,
Fizzy

Hi FIZZ

In the 18th century 'The Act of Union' re- the Islands of GB and Ireland were joined administratively - one parliment to serve both countries.
In 1799 the British Under Secretary Cooke, wrote to Mr Pitt Prime Minister "The Union is the only way to prevent Ireland becoming too great and powerful."
The repeal of this Act otherwise known as Home Rule became the object of every Nationalist party at Westminister.
There is lots of background information  on the British army in Ireland on
http://www.esatclear.ie/~curragh/mutiny.htm

The Curragh Camp in Co Kildare featured high in all aspects of army history and army occupation, as it was and still is a huge army site for the British previously and the Irish Defence forces today 2005.

Fizz:
If you have the name of the regiment I am sure we can determine where he was and when.

Thanks everyone.

He was in the 3rd Garrison Battalion and it simply states that they served in Ireland in 1807-1813 but I was wondering where he would have been based and what sort of duties they would have done and whether he was likely to have been killed or have died there.

Hi Frizzy, The 48th reg.of foot was stationed at Nass, near Dublin, in Ireland, in 1816, before it left for Aust.in 1817.   Maybe Nass was a base for the army...Rob
