37 Bailgate Lincoln - William Hall - 1881
« on: Thursday 03 November 05 22:08 GMT (UK) »
My gggrandfather, William Hall, born c1834 in North Kelsey, lived at 37 Bailgate Lincoln.

His listed employment at 1881 census was publican.

Can anyone confirm whether 37 Bailgate is/was a pub?

Can it be established what hostelry he was a publican in?

In the 1900 Kelly's Directory, 37 Bailgate was the Barley Mow public house kept by Edward Winning.  It wasn't a pub in the 1960s or I would remember it.

It was on the west side of Bailgate, about halfway between Chapel Lane and Westgate.

Of course, it's always possible that it was renumbered, but in the 1933 Directory, 37 Bailgate was a chippy - one of two owned by Walter DERRY, fried fish dealer.

I spoke to the newsagent today @ Bailgate News.  They remembered it being a chip shop and now it's a house.

Hi Mark you might find this interesting https://www.flickr.com/photos/lincolnian/903847048/ found it whist researching my Great Great Grandfather who in 1872 on the burial record of his son is listed as being a publican of Bailgate. There's a few pubs along there so someone checked the Lincoln Street Directory for 1872 for a Thomas Palmer and it came up as number 37 . The building is still there and the sign is still outside
