Can any one please help I have come across a reference to J A Lee "Shining with the Shiner" in a family book and was wondering who the Shiner was, was it J. A. Lee himself or some other colourful New Zealand  character, any help would be most appreciated. Thanks

From the NZ Book Council website:

"In the non-autobiographical, amusing anecdotes and yarns of Shining with the Shiner (1944), written almost flauntingly in the year he entered the political wilderness, and in the related volume Shiner Slattery (1964), Lee turns the Otago regional folk hero Ned Slattery (1840–1927) into a national icon, the spirit of beating the Protestant work ethic and surviving by one’s wits."

John A Lee was a fascinating man - I met him once, and I think I still have a copy of that book in storage thousands of miles away!

Thanks for that information, I will try and see if I can get a copy of the book over here, apparently my grandfather had met Ned Slattery and told stories about him to his children, hence the family references I have come across. Thanks
